Do your coworkers and management know?

I feel like we need to change and be more open about it. Too many people, especially from a non western background--don't how to deal with mental illnesses and think it's better to hide them from people outside their immediate family. They also think your work will use it to fire you if you aren't performing well, which could be true depending on how you frame it and how early you bring it up. Not to mention your relationship with your coworkers and boss.

But by telling others such as coworkers and your boss and early on, they can understand your thought process and motivations better, and help accommodate you if needed.

Obviously accountability needs to be taken from our end and not use it as an excuse or crutch. We may have to work harder to perform just well in our job as someone else who is neurotypical, but that's life man. Of course, ask for accomodations off needed.

I already told a few coworkers I have ADD a few months back, and I just casually told boss and my boss's boss that I have it other day. My bosses boss didn't believe it at first thought I was self diagnosing myself. But I told him I got diagnosed the year before and am being treated. My work performance is above average btw, but it helps to have people know how I think and work. Luckily I am really cool with them.

My last job was not so forgiving. It was too late. I had a terrible boss who formed a negative opinion of me, and I didn't feel comfortable confiding with her that I might have add and was trying to get diagnosed and treated. I confided with her boss instead. But she told her anyway. That job didn't turn out so well and my psychiatrist was a dumb ass with his doctor's note.

I wrote about for a mental health site a while ago. Telling people is good, if you trust the people you're telling. That's the key, right?

i dont have any mental disorders or illnesses

i also genuinely question the value of an ADHD or Anxiety diagnosis if apparently the vast majority of people would now qualify for one

They wouldn't. You can have an episode of depression without having a depression disorder. It's a diagnosis when it's chronic, a bad passive.

I'm not into accommodation at all anymore. I've spent too much time covering for workers that need to leave because of their kids and families and shit. My rule for about 5 years now has been "fuck you, I don't care, you fuck me, I fuck you back!"

I don't ask for accomodations myself. last job asked me if I need any and I was like, "I don't know. I don't think so?"

the vast majority likely don't have it. And there's varying degrees of it, in which not everyone needs to be treated. I have it in my mom's side. Psychiatrists will ask you a lot of questions, and it always starts with childhood, which I did have inattentive issues since.

That's true. Tell it to people you trust.

Only one, my therapist. Struggled with depression since middle school. Spent most of my life hiding it from friends and family, still do. Only started recently like in the past 2 or so years going to a therapist.

All of CE, PotD, and the sex board.

Irl, my parents, brother, and cousin that lives with us. I mentioned it at my last job, as it was starting to affect my performance and cause issues, but it didn't go as I expected. I mentioned it to my coworkers and management, and it caused all of them to get in argument with each other over who has worse health. It was all "You don't know anything, I have to take medicine." "Oh yeah, well I have to take two!" "That's nothing, I'm diagnosed and take a pill twice a day." "Ha, both of mine are twice a day."

It went in like that for a minute before I just walked away. Besides, the issues they were talking about were physical. One was morbidly obese and had to take pills to control sugar and blood pressure(and she'd still gorge herself). The other had a simple issue I don't recall, but still needed medication. Seems like there was a 3rd person too, but I'm pretty sure they got pushed out of the conversation like I did.

Also, I was supposed to be on both anxiety and depression meds, and wasn't. So... Yeah. I never brought it up again. They just had to deal with me having occasional panic attacks and not doing my job for a bit.

Im a school psychologist and Im very open with staff, families, and especially students about having a diagnosis of Generalized Anxiety Disorder. I feel that people in mental health talk a big game about how mental health should not be stigmatized, so Id be quite the hypocrite if I kept my own anxiety a secret.

I share it openly to show that
1. There is no shame in having a disability
2. It does get better

The response has always been positive, at least to my face.
