Deadpool? As in 4th wall breaking, hilarious ryan reynolds deadpool? I can't wrap my head around how a BA movie in any universe can have something in common with Deadpool.

Then again I don't think of deadpool and tss as that different, they're both quality entertaining comic book movies

Deadpool's humor is on brand to itself but humor as general theme still exists in the BA movie. There's just less of it. You remember this scene from terminator 2?

It's a bit different as it's a fictional middle east country. Gods of Egypt is legitimately Egypt. Lol

From what I read they chose to change it to being a fictional middle eastern country specifically to avoid casting Egyptians.

Kahndaq is from the comics and predates the movie by a long time. It's the same thing as Gotham = Chicago, Latveria = Latvia, Wakanda = Rwanda, Metropolis = New York, Smallville = BFE, Kansas.

That's just where he's from. The only Egyptian mythology is named of the gods that donated their power to Black Adam.

Of course the original fawcett comics were racist as fuck and so some of the legacy remains despite attempts to sanitize it but it wasn't done specifically to avoid casting Egyptian people. That's a decision made by the executive crew and would have happened regardless of where the movie was set.

sounds like Shazam. fun movie that i definitely exceeded my expectations but i've never bothered or wanted to rewatch since the first time i saw it

i would call Shazam a great movie too though. but i don't really have any desire to see it ever again.

In the original comics (from the 40s) he was from Egypt. Kahndaq's first appearance was in 2006 and they retconned it. Specifically to avoid cultural issues by associating real world places with real genocide as comic analogues.

So its still inspired by Egyptian mythology with no Egyptian representation in the movie. Wakanda was also a made up place but still had African representation. Anyway this is my own personal reason not to watch it. Im not calling for its boycott or anything.

You dont have to agree with critics in general to understand an aggregate of professional reviews has more value than a completely unsecured viewer score that is frequently hit with bots to pad review scores.

This is valid and people arguing against it would probably agree if the score was reversed. These days people are either side a or side b. No room for logic.

Yes exactly. It's been one of the major criticisms of a lot of superheroes flicks. Dr. Strange got endless shit for casting that Irish woman which the studio has only recently admitted was a mistake. The fucked up the mandarin in IM3 only to later retcon that in Shang Chi. The casting of Gal Gadot is still controversial.

Progress is being made of course but I think Alan Moore was pretty spot on here:

The superheroes themselves largely written and drawn by creators who have never stood up for their own rights against the companies that employ them, much less the rights of a Jack Kirby or Jerry Siegel or Joe Schuster would seem to be largely employed as cowardice compensators, perhaps a bit like the handgun on the nightstand. I would also remark that save for a smattering of non-white characters (and non-white creators) these books and these iconic characters are still very much white supremacist dreams of the master race. In fact, I think that a good argument can be made for D.W. Griffiths Birth of a Nation (1915) as the first American superhero movie, and the point of origin for all those capes and masks.

The original Hocus Pocus got 38% at RT, yet everybody seems to love it.

I like that T2 scene, a bit of dark humor. Well dark might not be the right word but yeah. I actually thought of something else when you meant deadpool.

Before the movie everyone was saying how Ryan Reynolds was born to play Deadpool, that deadpool was created with ryan reynolds in mind. And that movie delivered and then some.

Black Adam is similar in that dwayne johnson had been the fan favorite to play the character for decades, with people doing fan images of him in the role. So there's a lot riding on them doing the rock black adam well since the casting is on point just like with deadpool, they just need a good script, story and characters.
