When the WoW:TCG was around, there were rare cards that included scratch-off cards with codes you could redeem in-game for certain items. One of those was a Feldrake mount, a dragon that looks identical to the extremely easy-to-procure black drake mount except with some green flame tints. The TCG was eventually discontinued and as such, the cards with unused codes went up in price. It's gone for as much as 3.5k and just last week, someone bought one for $2,200.

Today, Blizzard announced that to advertise their upcoming expansion, they're doing twitch drops. If you're unfamiliar, twitch drops are when you attach your account to the account of whatever game is involved. You watch a streamer play that game for X amount of hours, you get an in-game item. So this mount that people paid thousands of dollars for can now be obtained by having a muted stream of some rando in another tab for four hours.

Most people are fine or even happy. Some are not.

Eeeeyy, so do I.

It's not the only TCG loot I have, but it's the only TCG mount I've got.

This, pretty much. It's not like the loot cards came with a contract stating the item would never ever be available in any other way.

People just get crazy with their collectibles.

Besides, this is a limited-time launch-window event that lasts two days and requires people to link their Twitch accounts. That's $3,600 worth of effort, easily.

Yes! It's fucking idiotic. Blizz should have deactivated all of the unused codes a decade ago and put ways to earn them in-game.

You kinda sorta could. the code gave you an item that you could either use to earn the mount, or sell on the AH. So until every code that was redeemed in game was used to earn the mount, you could grind out gold to buy it on the AH. I bought a few pets this way, but the few remaining fel drakes were juuuuust out of what I was able to save up after my main source of gold at the time got nerfed into oblivion. At least as of Cata it was something anybody who liked to play the AH could easily have saved up for within a few days though.

I feel like I should also point out to anyone who hasn't played WoW that the mount is fourteen years old. So it's not even a good looking mount at this point. Compare this:

I feel like this is just the NFT thing all over again. Digital goods do not have real value. They can be produced in literally infinite quantities. There was never any 'real' scarcity. The card itself might be worth something, but the mount is basically one line of code telling the game that you either own it or don't own it.

It costs nothing to flip the switch and say you own it. lol, it was never 'rare'.

Inflation happened regardless, but the Warlords of Draenor expansion fucked the economy to this day. They introduced a "mission table" system where you could recruit NPC followers and send them out on missions. The followers would each have their own traits, one of which doubled the amount of gold you would earn on these missions. That trait stacked additively, so three 200% gold followers would turn a 500g reward into a 2000g reward.

The mission table took maybe five minutes and the missions usually took about a day to complete. So there was nothing stopping you from leveling ten alts, going through the necessary setup, and having every alt making thousands of gold a day.

They've added massive gold sinks into the game solely to try and offset this - for instance, a five million gold mount with an attached auction house NPC - and still haven't managed it.

That sounds like a headache, and by decent chunk I only meant more than you would want to spend everyday. I remember raid tanks complaining about repair costs that were less than that iirc. Then again it was a long time ago and I could be wrong.

It's still like that for modern items, too. Well, at least if you wear cloth. Plate wearers usually get pretty detailed gear, but as a warlock main, every single chest item I get is just a flat texture with no 3D details. Like something you would see in a game from 25 years ago.

It's pretty embarrassing for a game I pay $15 a month for. Here's a set from what's considered by most to be one of the most difficult challenges they've ever put in the game. The robe is all one flat texture. The chest, the design at the bottom, none of it pops out lol. It's so bad.

Tough shit.

If people were stupid enough to ever pay that much for a discontinued ingame item, that's on them. Blizzard did not set the price tag over $2k. Scalpers did.

If Blizz re-offers a formerly exclusive item back into the game, it's their business, their product.

"Limited edition" merch and rewards in the game was always something I and many other players were AGAINST, period. New players never get a chance to obtain those items. Older players can brag about having discontinued items, but most of it just gathers dust in their collection. It's dumb.

The Mage Tower content is a prime example. Certain character appearances are straight up no longer obtainable to newer players no matter if they repeat the same game achievements now. Diehard mouthbreathers who played during the Legion expansion before 2020 get offended whenever someone suggests making those items available again to new players. They treat it like the developers would be stealing something from them because they did the achievements during the original event. Whooptydoo...they still got their reward, which was having the items all this time. Making those items available to new players is NOT taking that away. It's allowing more players to enjoy earning those rewards too.

I'm saying this as a long time player who did the original Mage Tower event and earned the rewards. I got my kicks out of having them. I had my time to show off exclusive looks on my characters. My reward was having those Mage Tower rewards unlocked earlier than other players. That's it, THAT was the actual reward. Now it's time to let new players have a shot at them too, it helps promote the game. Catering to greedy old players who just want to gatekeep content has always seemed stupid to me, period.

Shelling out over $2k for a fucking ugly out-dated wad of pixels seems equally dumb. And that's on the fools willing to pay it, not Blizzard. There's a ton of better looking mounts still obtainable in game right now.
