Were you?

I was in the middle school band but I didn't care enough to keep doing it into high school (though I think it was strictly marching band and fuck that shit yo)

Yep. I was actually reminded of it today. During my high school marching band, we had a school trip at 5 am to go on a bus to Rockefeller Center and play on The Today Show at 8 am. I remember being so surprised that The Today Show is filmed literally right next to Nintendo NY.

I did a year of band in middle school (played the clarinet), and I played in my elementary school's handbells group. I stopped after middle school because I wasn't particularly interested in practicing.

I played the clarinet for a bit in middle school but was never super passionate about it.

In truth I wanted to play either the sax or drums but could get neither for one reason or another. (I can't remember if it was a price reason or a lack of space. I was in middle school from 96' to 97' so its been a while and I just don't remember a lot of my middle school days).

I do remember being crazy jealous of the kids playing drums though.

Yep. From 5th grade to graduation.

I've played trumpet for 20 years now, and dabble in guitar (even though I'm shit at it.)

Edit: was also a tenor in 4th grade choir. That didn't last.

Did you guys go to tiny schools or something?

Even my middle school that had classes of only like 200 students, fielded a band. But it was a public school and the only school system that supported the whole county so maybe they qualified for specialized funding

Stage band 4th through 10th. Never cared about it, but I didn't hate it enough to force my parents to let me quit. At least, until it started interfering with sport.

My high school was smaller than that (~300 students total iirc), but we had a band.

In middle school, yes. Only was because my only alternative was art class, and one day of art class was all it took to have me literally in tears.

I stopped after that though, because by the end of the three years the gradually increasing number of practices and rehearsals cutting into my after-school time was starting to get on my nerves too.

In middle school. I played trombone.

It was actually pretty bizarre. I had lessons for a little while in 4th grade. I had gone down to the band room with a friend for some reason one day. The teacher just kind of asked if I knew how to play any instruments and I mentioned I played trombone for a little while. He got one out and made me show him. Next thing I know I'm getting pulled from class for lessons. I was never asked if I wanted to do band (I didn't). The teacher just signed me up (which includes changing my schedule as band replaced Spanish in my schedule).

He was a terrible teacher. He didn't actually teach anything and would just tell us to practice and play better. I wasn't even ever taught how to read music so I ended up just memorizing slide positions.

Not me, my parents couldnt afford the instrument rental (nowadays I know my towns school has instruments for kids that cant afford them).

My kids are in band, told them to stick through it to the end of middle school because otherwise they have to take general music and the teacher is very meh. My older daughter has a lot of musical aptitude though. Shes already dabbling in composing.

I got lucky with the tuba. They are expensive even compared to other instruments so the school had one I could use. I was also excused from being expected to take it home everyday so I could practice. Cause carrying a tuba on a school bus is a pain in the ass

I was in the middle school band. Played alto sax. I liked it alright, but didn't have the drive to be first chair or anything. I think if I had got into the after school jazz band I'd have loved that more, but you had to have good grades in everything to get in, which is a dumb and counterintuitive system.

I only halfway wanted to progress into high school band. I knew I'd have to go to more football games and such and I hated the the one time I went to one in middle school. Plus I was more into guitar at the time. I also forgot to get a new reed so on top of not practicing I sounded like crap during the tryouts.

I ended up selling my sax after that, but after a few years I started to regret it. Really wish I had kept at it now. One day I might get another.

The school I went to was small and really didn't have much outside of sports teams. And the only sports it had were Basketball, Baseball and Track. Though when I started going there, it was only on it's second year being open. A few years after I graduated it moved to a different location which is bigger and likely has more stuff.
