There are a lot of cases where it's useful to divide something into 8 - although 6 or 12 tend to be even better for many such cases.

You sound like someone who could be sold a left handed hammer.

The imperial system is very good for mental calculation of measurments using base2 ratios. "Uh yeah 14 millimetre or 20 millimetre, gimme a 7 millimetre bit". Mm does not work well for this. Theres a reason construction in canada is done in imperial still.

For all the love you give the metric system.

I generally hear only about the Meter/Centi-Meter/Milli-Meter.

You guys always exclude the Deci-Meter from being used in your daily measurements, why is that?

Same with the Deca-Meter & Hecto-Meter.

Kilo-Meter gets all the love, but Deca-Meters & Hecto-Meters are largely ignored?

Why don't you guys use those units more often?

cause it's completely pointless to say "this is 1.2 decimeters long" when you can just say "this is 12 centimeters long"
if you wanna go really accurate you can also go "this is 120 millimeters long"
only times i see deci is deciliters for liquids

same with Deca and Hecto, it's a complete waste of effort and time to say "this field is 1 hectameter, 2 decameters and 5 meters"
when you can just say "this field is 125 meters"

Divisibility. If you want a build to have nice proportionality, then you want numbers that have nice multiples and/or many factors

10 has 4 factors: 1, 2, 5, and 10

12 has 6 factors: 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, and 12

16 has 5 factors: 1, 2, 4, 8, and 16

more factors = more proportionality

10 isn't a magical number, it's just how many fingers we have. There are other considerations as to why other bases are useful in measurement.

We could have done 10 months of roughly 36 days each, but we chose 12 months of roughly 30 days each because 12 months evenly divides 4 seasons of 3 months.

people did do 10 months for a good while until one of Caesars made up two more ones and named them after himself and his sugar daddy, and fucked up the naming system so October is no longer the 8th month
but to be fair to him, that system was kinda shit, partly cause they just ignored days for reasons i don't understand fully

True, and that's a testament to measurements being arbitrary and adapting to what's most useful/common to us.

Metric is great, don't get me wrong. It's the standard even in the US. But, there are circumstances where other systems of measurement may offer advantages, so it's not a bad thing that they're still in use today.

so why is it that when i have to convert meters to feet it comes up as decimals?

this only ever comes up during DnD cause that's the only thing i'm forced to use it with.
so i had to write down the height of my new character. he's a halfling small boy. only 89 centimeters.

google "centimeter to feet", put in the number. it comes up as 2.91 feet
i put it in another converter that comes up with 2'11''

these things should not be separate numbers
that's my main gripe with Imperial at the moment

Most construction/engineering in the states is done in 8ths or 16ths. A tape measure will typically be split into 1/16 increments. Bolts are called out by sizes such as 3/16, 5/8, etc. It's a good way to get pretty precise decimal measurements without having to say "I need a 0.1875" bolt". I'm not really sure what the history is behind 1/16 being the increment, but I would imagine that's probably just the smallest increment easily perceptible to human eyes.

That said, metric is objectively more precise and accurate when going to very small measurements (such as the micron or nano scale) which is why it's always used in anything science related

The first part of your post is demonstrably false. Rome had 2 non-months during the winter because the time from season to season was obviously more than 304 days, but the year still had to begin with spring, so there were roughly 60 days not counted as part of the annual calendar but still were counted regardless.

Neither Julius nor Augustus added the two months during winter as the 2 missing months (January and February) were added to the end of the calendar around 700 BC long before Julius or Augustus were ever born, and the months were later moved to the beginning of the calendar around 450 BC. All Rome ever did was rename Quintilis and Sextilis in honor of their beloved Caesars.

Think of it this way. The US Customary Units system gives the Metric folks plenty of experience to convert into another system.

By the time we meet Aliens, I doubt they'll be using any of our systems of measurement and when we need to convert from Metric to a foreign system, it'll be easy for Metric to do so since they're used to converting to US Customary.

Hypothetically, if we met a Vulcan like Aliens from Star Trek, do you really think they'll be using any system like we have on Earth? Doubtful!

So we have to learn to convert from Metric to another system.

Doesn't matter if it's US Customary Units or any alien units that they may natively have.

In the future, Metric will be the glue that binds humanity with Aliens in terms of measurement units.

It'll be that nice intermediary that we convert to or from.
