Kyrie knew better but more than that this country's has millions of people who were in line with what Nazi Germany did in regards to the Holocaust yet when someone Black whether that's Kanye West's rants or whether that's Kyrie posting a link to a movie, Black people are viewed as if racism only lives in the minds of Black people who have suffered agreed or not countless decades of racism in America and no one can dispute that.

We had a sitting US President who used racial talk every chance he got yet no one called him out for it including his claims of building a wall to keep out certain people South of an imaginary US border and again not one person said a word.

We have a political party (GOP) that for the better part of 50 years or so has used a platform of hate speech and lies to gain office and when they don't get their way, suddenly we need voter id's or the election was rigged or the voting machines were tampered with or they get urged by that same president to storm the Nation's Capitol and it's done in the name of White Nationalism and yes hatred and bigotry and I don't care if anyone agrees or not because that's the truth.

According to the US Census data, in about 25 to 30 years, the US will be one half White and one half People of Color so those of us who may be fortunate enough to be around at that time had better start figuring out how to make things better going forward or this country is going to be in a bigger mess than we are now in regards to race relations, sexism, homophobia etc.

You ran away like a dog with its tail tucked between its legs from your Superman is gay topic where you showed us all how homophobic and misinformed you can be, so let me just say that this post of yours here is chock full of over-reaching generalizations, and is almost as lazy a troll job as that Superman topic.

I'm sure some posters will take the bait, though. Out of boredom, if nothing else

It's not, people are identified before voting. You must not be from the US, in the US voter ID laws are laws that are trying to get people to buy ID's from the state that aren't super cheap additionally they close locations and reduce hours where you can get said ID in democratic leaning areas making it excessively difficult to even get it without transportation.

It wouldn't be controversial if ID's were free and efforts were made to make them reasonably accessible.

So how does one do that? Obviously by showing some form of government recognized personal document, like an ID.

It varies state-to-state, but currently where I live you are not required to show ID, just confirm your name and address verbally so they can check you off the voter roll

No wonder people are afraid of voter fraud.

Just having a federal level requirement of showing some form of state sanctioned id would definitely be an improvement.

It doesn't actually happen on any significant scale. It's mostly just fearmongering from the right because higher voter turnout tends to hurt republicans' chance of getting elected and that gives them an incentive to introduce barriers.

In theory, sure. In practice, unless those IDs are made affordable and equally available to everyone in every region, that requirement becomes a weapon that can be used to prevent people of lower SES or who live in certain areas from voting, which is exactly what many proponents are banking on. It's unlikely to yield any actual improvements to election integrity, especially where, as already mentioned, voter fraud doesn't currently happen on a significant level (and what does happen tends to be more or less evenly split along party lines, so it changes little to nothing).

I would assume so. Are you not required to carry some form of state recognized id in public in the US?

They're not afraid, there is no evidence it is occurring. It's a blatant and obvious effort at voter suppression.

You assume incorrectly. Getting an ID is expensive enough to be prohibitive for somebody living paycheque to paycheque, is often only available during normal business hours (meaning people need to take time off to get one), and for many people is largely impossible to get to unless they take half a day.

Nichtcrawler-X posted...

Nope. Just a driver's license if you're driving, and obviously those that don't drive don't have that.

But what if you are in a situation where the police, or someone similar, requires you to legally identify yourself?

Just risk the fine, because getting other carryable id is to expensive and difficult?

There generally isn't a fine for that, to my knowledge (hence, "it's not required"). Even when it comes to driver's licenses, many jurisdictions will offer a short grace period during which you can bring your licence to a police station to avoid being fined for not having it on you while driving (though that's often up to individual officers' discretion, which translates into it only being an option if you're white enough).
