I remember reading about an Australian family that ended up literally filling their entire garage with toilet paper because they bought in bulk but fucked up the measurement unit of what they ordered so that got a lot more than they intended to.

It is something that all households need. Similar things like eggs, bread (especially baker's yeast), and milk were gone. TP just got hit harder in some ways because all households need it (milk, for instance, is useless to the lactose intolerent) and because it got popular as an "easy" thing to flip/scam others with as you could gouge others for a profit.

The thing I'll never forget about the pandemic is that for the first several weeks of the shutdowns all the liquor stores in Pennsylvania were closed. Beer stores were open as were grocery stores that sell beer or wine, but all liquor stores in PA are owned and operated by the state, and since government owned buildings were closed it included liquor stores. Factor in that grocery stores etc can't sell liquor in PA, cue loads of Pennsylvanians traveling to Ohio or West Virginia to get liquor.

Ohio and WV actually announced that they would stop selling to people with a PA license, shortly before they reopened with guidelines

I worked at Costco during this whole thing (still do) and let me explain how every day went.

The TP would be fully stocked out before the building opened. Said aisle is the very last aisle, farthest from the front door.

The aisles leading up to it were roped off in a way that everything was a one way street, no going backwards.

The staff, about 20 of us, were lined up in front of the TP like armed guards.

One of the managers would say, 'we're ready, open the doors'

It was like running of the fucking bulls. People sprinting like they're being chased by a tsunami. All of us handing out the TP one by one to everybody (limit of 1) customers are taking videos on their phones, us yelling at them to stop it or they'll get nothing or get thrown out, pallets of water and TP being ravaged, 20 mins later its all over, nothing left.

People were waiting outside for like 2 hours. Absolute madness.

Not in NC either.

The strongest stuff you'll find is Guinness or Boone's Farm.

Back in the early 2000s some Indian dudes came in Walmart looking for Liquor.

They looked 7ft tall and had headgear on like the guy from the James Bond movie.

Anyway my co worker told them that.

Why do people act like they can't wipe their ass with anything but toilet paper.

I remember when my grocery store got in one little case of hand sanitizer. A girl brought it up to the register and started handing one out to every person in line and looked all proud like she was handing out cash. People flocked around her like she was Jesus or something.

Such weird times when people were scalping basic sanitary supplies on every website

At least it doesn't go bad and you can keep using it for years to come.

I was still working dm at wendys at the time and our stores had dozens and dozens of extra rolls just stacked up. I green lit my employees to take what they needed if they couldn't find it in stores.

Napkins and plastic forks and stuff too since we had such a surplus and nobody ever seemed to ask for them.

The weirdest part was that sometimes you'd see huge stretches of empty shelves right next to fully stocked shelves of a different type of the same product. Like some types of cereal would be gone while others were totally untouched. I wonder how some of those companies stay in business producing products so unpopular that unhinged people panic buying everything in sight look at them and decide they're not so desperate after all.
