Is it Metallica's St. Anger? I wouldn't be surprised if there's a worse album by a better band/artist, but whatever it is the amount of vitriol for St. Anger surely tops it.

I actually thought of Lulu first but either one is a good answer.

Others that come to mind are Chinese Democracy (Guns N' Roses), Van Halen III, Generation Swine (Motley Crue), and Into the Unknown (Bad Religion).

is chinese democracy really hated or just a huge letdown because of the time it took? if there had been an album two years before chinese democracy i don't think it has a particularly notable reputation

True it might be more so the latter but to fans it might not mean much of a difference.

Youtuber Todd in the Shadows has made a whole series out of covering albums like this.
So I guess even my musically-ignorant self should not be surprised to see St Anger mentioned so much.

I think most people say Recovery, but it's Encore.

Edit: Re-read the topic title and Recovery is probably the most hated. I was thinking worst, which is what Encore is, but people don't actively hate on it like Recovery

It's neither of those, it's Relapse that you're thinking of. I came in to post it because it is indeed terrible (with a few bangers like Beautiful and Underground), though Em honestly has a few subpar albums on his resume. But seriously as bad as Encore is, it's still got nothing on Relapse and it deserves a special mention even among his weaker albums. Apparently Relapse has had a very miniscule resurgence in respect but those people are wrong and I can assure you it's still the consensus and the consensus is correct. Recovery was considered somewhat a return to form after two bad albums.

And a hot take from me: I could not give a shit less about Tool's first album Undertow and they're probably my favorite band ever. But you know, I guess that's a hot take apparently (summoning all Tool fans please). I just like spiritual Tool over angry Tool okay

I thought Eminem's indisputable and almost universally agreed worst was Revival? Granted, that already came after a string of bad releases, so it's not precisely a sudden dip in quality, but perhaps the fact it makes everything else look tame in comparison and that he never again released anything worth attempting to defend sort of fits the bill here.

To add to the confusion I'm pretty sure Relapse is considered Eminem's worst album. I'm pretty sure he apologized for it later or something

Which is funny to me because it's my favorite Eminem album. Can listen to the whole thing front to back

pretty sure it's more a case of relapse coming out in a time when he was still expected to put out good music and was riding the goodwill of his older material. encore was the first big disappointment, and then he took a 5-year break and the end result was relapse, which made it especially infamous.

eminem barely qualifies for this topic since there's at least 5 garbage albums that could take the title as his worst depending on who you ask and none of those answers would be considered hot takes.

dammit I think you're right. I completely forgot it existed because I never listened to anything past MMLP2.

yeah basically Eminem just clearly doesn't qualify for this topic

st anger is a very good shout here, and i agree that eminem has too many bad albums to qualify here (encore is probably the best option, if only because eminem being bad was surprising then)

don't think undertow qualifies - i think it's mostly ignored these days, certainly not hated

there are quite a lot of crap late-period records by aging bands (pink floyd, rolling stones, etc), but those are boring answers. people becoming terrible abruptly is much more fun - a few examples here:

lou reed - metal machine music
nas - nastradamus
bob dylan - self portrait
lil wayne - rebirth
morbid angel - illud divinum insanus

I guess Weezer probably doesn't qualify anymore, but Make Believe is pretty universally despised. I'd call it an example of "abruptly becoming terrible", because their previous album Maladroit is a contender for their best album IMO.
