but its still a very soulful, heartfelt game. You can tell there's just something special about this game. No matter how many times I get screwed over by janky controls, camera, finicky z-targeting or cheapass enemy placements, I can't give up on the game because there's a certain beauty, a certain purity to its design. There's just a "feel" to it that I don't think Breath of the Wild or Twilight Princess even have.

just look at that sunset

that sunset will make you forget all about the damn Keese

I have more trouble with the stuff you listed in newer games than I do in that game

Yeah the top tier games in the N64 had the most fluid controls I've ever played with. Modern games have yet to replicate the feel of Mario 64.

I have no problem playing most "janky" older games especially when the good parts heavily outweigh the bad like in OOT. The game still feels magical to me even after almost 25 years. That says something. Just wish my N64 worked on my tv. Been dying to replay it for a good while.

How is this sarcasm?

There's not a lot of games that just do what you tell them to when you tell them to. Mario 64 is a masterpiece in movement controls.

Camera...not so much.

Part of the reason for the feel is the creators needed to nail the artstyle since there was no crutch to fall back on with crude, early 3D video games. This is why so many well made old 3D games are said to have "soul".

Of course it is. It was basically a prototype of console 3D open world games. People expecting it to live up to modern standards are wholly unrealistic (and people pretending that it does have major nostalgia goggles on).

not really, no.

These early N64 were as much about the developers exploring a whole new world with seemingly endless possibilities (at the time) and wowing players as much as possible as about anything else.

Little details like the lakitu cam taking you for a joyride and going under the bridge right before mario pops up from a pipe in the beginning of mario 64, or navi going in 1st person mode looking for link and accidentally hitting the fence and shaking it off were details that don't add to the gameplay or make the game play better, but they sure added to the immersion and experience, just like some N64 effects such as lens flare.

If you compare Cruisn' USA to its most recent sequel, you'll find Cruisin' USA clunky and primitive, but it had details such as flies hitting your windshield in Iowa that you'd not find in the much better looking recent games, not to mention that the graphical assets were all digitized from real objects, unlike the newest game.
