oh I have had to reckon with my own participation in that bullying. It was absolutely part of my decision a decade ago-ish to just be more genuine on the internet and stop living a life steeped in cynicism and sarcasm

jp is another person I'd love to see again if only to apologize, not that I deserve the chance

not to defend bullying in any way, but the prevailing (unfortunate) attitude at the time was one of "it's just the internet it doesn't matter", so I think a lot of people engaged in really toxic behaviors with that as an excuse. I think some marginalized people especially lashed out against others as a defense or shield for themselves.

maybe MYC really was, deep down, a jerk. Maybe she was desperate to be accepted by a community, <i>any</i> community, and attacking someone else was the way to do it.

maybe both

Kana made me cry at a time when hardly anything could get through to me that much. I would prefer not to remember it exists, but I'll give credit where it's due that it did stir some emotions

eh, not to turn this topic into another MYC bashfest, but her bullying went much further than just making jp fat jokes. i don't think the "we were all jerks at the time" rationale really applies here.

plus i was already 16 when i arrived at this board in 2004 and i feel like the time MYC was very active was a few years later than that. i'd say most of us were past the "dumb kids" phase at that point.

for the record, i got along very well with her at the time but in retrospect, i can definitely see how her behavior was problematic.

as someone who lurked from 2005 and became active in 2006 MYC was more of a before-my-time figure I heard about from others but didn't really see much of personally

and uh my times as an outcast in the late '00s would definitely disagree with b8 being chilled out by then

i didn't explain my point well. what i meant was that at the time MYC was active, most of us weren't kids anymore in a literal sense.

of course, a lot of us still acted quite dumb at the time (myself included) but the "oh we were just kids, cut us some slack" defense doesn't really work. most of us were adults at that point, not kids.

regarding MYC specifically she would be 16 in 2004 as well, not to mention the backbone you'd need to develop to be openly trans in the early 2000s

I remember MYC giving me some helpful perspective over AIM back in middle school when a friend of mine got killed in a hit and run and I was freaking out over mortality. I dont personally remember any bullying from her, but that mightve been during the period where I was less active here.
