Depends on the workplace. In a corporate environment I would never presume that any of my coworkers are my friends, but I work in state govt and it's a totally different environment. You can be friends with someone here and then end up working with them again 10 years down the road in a different agency. Or better yet they end up being the one who hires you

Given that the average workplace operates like a high school clique it can be a good idea to have generic, ultimately throwaway 'work friends'. It'll keep you out of most of the drama.
