Like general discussion and whatnot.
I even feel like there was more video content available.

I don't entirely disagree.

I'd argue it's mainly the shift from the Internet being more of a "Wild West" where anything goes and there are tons of places where individuals can produce various types of content to a more homogenized utility where everything mostly feels consolidated and transformed into something more mainstream.

At least some of that might be because modern search engines are hot liquid ass-butter when it comes to finding stuff that isn't sponsored or on endorsed web sites, but part of it is just that a lot of the old school freeform content just isn't there anymore (and isn't an economically feasible model even if it is).

A lot of it depends on exactly what sort of content you're looking for, though. I'd say the average person never really thinks about things that way because they're happy enough with the more centralized and more sterile options available.

Absolutely. There was a ton of wild shit on the internet before web 2.0. Some of the stuff I read I can't find reference to literally anywhere anymore

It might just be nostalgia, but I don't even remotely agree with this on any conceivable level.

Yes, but "cynicism" is just another word for "realistic".

If you want the Internet to be like it was in the 90's/early 00's, just go on the Dark Web. 90% of what is on there is basically an archive of all that stuff anyways.
