A woman jailed in Etowah County for allegedly using drugs during pregnancy has filed a lawsuit against the sheriffs office saying she wasnt pregnant, and that investigators placed a childs words over medical confirmation.

Stacey Freeman of Gallant was under investigation by the Department of Human Resources for substance use when one of her children told a social worker her mom was pregnant, according to the lawsuit. Freeman offered to take a pregnancy test and Etowah County Department of Human Resources employees entered an order for one. However, she never took the test and Etowah County Sheriff Investigator Brandi Fuller issued a warrant for her arrest, according to the lawsuit.

Except she wasn't pregnant, but was still held in jail for a day and a half. She offered to take a pregnancy test to prove she wasn't pregnant, but they refused. They were just going off of the word of one of her children.

Because she is apparently a mother of other children and a mother with children in her care shouldnt be a fucking junkie.

first of all, we don't know if she's a "junkie", and secondly, if she is, the legality of the drug doesn't change anything; she could be abusing oxy, alcohol, Robitussin, etc.

If you get fucked up in front of your kids habitually, you are a junkie. Even if its just robotripping, duster, jenkem, peppermint oil.

That's why the state should perform its actual due diligence, not take uncorroborated testimony from a child.

the article doesn't give enough context for us to come to that conclusion, but like you're saying, why does whether the drugs are illegal or not matter - if she's abusing dangerous substances, it's not in any way better if they're legal

Because if a kid says that they are doing drugs, its pretty likely that they mean illegal drugs.

When i was a kid, there was a clear line between drugs and DRUGS. I doubt the kid is one of those pedantic losers that say shit like "Well caffeine is a DRUG and you do that all the time!"

I've had an 8-month pregnant chick OD on heroin as a patient and it's really infuriating to see. This dumb bitch just ruined her child's life before it even started. It's one of the few things that actually enrage me >_>

For those debating what she may have been on, the article spells it out pretty clearly:

The warrant incorrectly states that Freeman tested positive for marijuana, amphetamines and alcohol while pregnant.

When I was little, I thought "drinking and driving" included nonalcoholic beverages. I once snatched a can of Coca Cola out of my mom's hand and told her not to drink and drive. I'm glad she didn't get arrested for that.

Once when I was like 5 or 6, I told a book-mobile driver at my local library that I was "drinking" and it caused an awkward conversation. I was referring to apple juice that I was drinking because I was thirsty and didn't know the term drinking had connotations beyond just consuming fluids (and the container was marked clearly. It's not like I was holding a glass of something that visually could be confused for bourbon or scotch lol)

and lmao at the user throwing the word "junkie" around like that. That logic has some real Brutai energy to it.

The word of a child can sometimes be all there is for a criminal offense.
