I'm a huge Tolkien nerd who wishes other media was more like the books, but when people complained about there being POC actors playing parts in the new show because it clashed with the lore I rolled my eyes so hard that they almost fell out of my head. If one is such a fanboy that they're that much of a stickler about the lore they wouldn't even have interest in the show anyway so it's obvious it's not about just protecting the precious backstory Tolkien made.

"Well, you see, scientifically, they would be more light skinned because they dwell deep within the ocean, meaning that they don't get any sun rays therefore they would not be able to be dark skinned. The same reason why, scientifically, Ariel wouldn't be able to be black"

The same people complain when a superhero or villain is cast as a different race from their comic counter part, saying why can't they just use characters already of that race etc, and then also complain that it's being shoved down their throat when such a character is created or used.

I'm a huge Tolkien nerd

You're probably not as big of a nerd as you think, because even black twitter was calling it out since Tolkien clearly outlines geographical locations and peoples in his lore and stories.
Hell, there's a Youtuber named "JustSomeGuy" who went over it.

In fact, it's weird to me. An American acquaintance sent this to me about how it's actually the black community at odds regarding recasting T'Challa:

https://twitter.com/chillmongerr/status/1584721810855104512

But no, it's more convenient to ignore all of that.
If anything, all of you sound like the racists, or at the very least egotistical and only saying such crap to make yourselves feel good rather than actually address the context and reasonings as to why the complaints are drawn, much less from the demographics involved.

It's like you want USA ethnic minorities to have leftovers rather than unique, original characters that won't be overshadowed by their legacy counterparts. Bet you don't care enough to even know that James Gunn tweeted a pic of Mr. Terrific.

But oh yeah, sloppy second characters like literal black Superman instead of a unique black Superman in the character Icon? Yeah that's the best thing ever. Lmao what a joke.

I know he did. It's just telling if that is the big major deal breaker to someone when none of these shows, movies, or games are going to be 100% lore accurate anyway. I care more about the story and characters being done right instead of caring about what race the actors are.

I'm ok with this if the writers at least put some thought into it, in the sense that there are circumstances to justify the situation. This is because I appreciate thought-out world building, which adds to effective suspension of belief. Yes, this applies to other things than ethnicity as well.

For instance, in a medieval-based fantasy setting, it's usually not common for the vast majority of people to travel around a lot. Most people just stay in one place their entire life. If someone looks and sounds completely different than other people in a specific region, that can be justified by saying that that person has a travelling profession, like a trader, sailor or mercenary (for example they did this a couple of times in Vikings).
If something takes place in a big centrally-located (coastal) city, that's a solid reason for there to be all kinds of ethnicities (which for example they did with the city of Qarth in Game of Thrones).

Real-life-based scenarios can be more difficult in this matter, especially if this takes place in a setting where certain ethnicities were very much treated as less than others.
One can choose to ignore all of those circumstances, just cast all kinds of ethnicities and simply not mention why that makes sense. This can work, provided it's not blended with elements like discrimination (which was very clearly the case in the last season of Legends of Tomorrow), as such story-telling elements in a historical do clearly conflict with the presence of an ethnically diverse cast.

Tldr version: I am fine with ethnically diverse casting, though I do appreciate it if it contextually makes sense.

What a stupid post. Thunderbolt Ross being recast is not even remotely equivalent to Tchalla. He was a side character and an old man. Society very obviously treats deaths of the young very different than death of the old. The only comparable example to Tchalla is Paul Walker from Fast who they did not recast.
