Well?

This is one of 2 polls Im going to make because Im curious what yall think. I overheard someone that showed up to work talking about how he got pulled over for speeding on the way to work. He said the cops were hiding in pitch darkness with no lights on. I know this is a thing because Ive seen them do this several times.

It feels like some bullshit that they are allowed to do that but at the same time just dont speed. What are your thoughts? Should cops be allowed to just hide like that?

You're supposed to follow the speed limit at all times, not just when a police officer is present.

Why does it matter if you can see them or not? You shouldn't be speeding regardless. The speed limit signs are clearly posted, and that's enough warning.

I don't really have an issue with it, though I'd argue the tactic is more about fulfilling their quotas or whatever than about actually making the roads safer. I'd imagine that having them plainly visible does a lot more to get more people to follow the speed limit.

I use my high beams whenever I pass by where the local law enforcement like to camp out and watch for speeders since if they dare to say anything about it, I can simply tell them I was afraid of hitting a deer in the dark since the area in question is known for having quite a few deer roaming around it at all times. Pretty sure it annoys them getting lit up all of a sudden by my LED headlights too.

If the only concern was road safety, there are studies that demonstrate loosening road laws results in less crashes and fatalities because people tend to drive in a way that they are comfortable with and pay more attention to the road/traffic rather than shit like am I going 1mph over the limit or did I stop for exactly 3 seconds at the stop sign instead of just 2.5 seconds when theres no traffic

You should concede that the point of speed traps is revenue raising, not public safety. This isnt an argument you will win because the evidence doesnt support your claims.

FYI, the newest kind of speed trap is apparently posting cameras at school zones that are set to record speeders license plates no matter the time of day, as Ive heard from a friend who is familiar with these systems that theyre set to record you going fifteen miles above the posted speed limit even if the lights arent flashing and school has long since ended for the day. Gotta make that quota somehow though, eh?

Thats a weird way to look at it. There are various functions and units of police. We have entire traffic only cops on bikes whose job is solely accidents and traffic stops while the normal cops do their daily job. There are days that are slow too in policing

i mean not really. Sounds like youre just using some specific example to make it look worse than what it is. Majority of their time is spent handling accidents. That being said, speeding and drunk driving IS a serious problem in our country. We have famous football players in this country who have killed women while speeding. Multiple times, THIS year

It doesn't matter if the cop is doing it for just reasons or not in the end, it's still stopping a speeding driver. Anyone who's been driving for a year isn't anxious anymore anyway so thats a stupid point. No one is worried about going 1 mile over the speed limit or having to stop at a stop sign unless you're a 13 year old girl that's just learning how to drive. The reason people speed is usually because they're TOO comfortable. A quick Google search shows a study speeding was the result of 29% of car accidents in 2020.

So unless you can show a stat that a country has 0% car accidents from speeding then its you who lacks evidence to support your claims speeding is never dangerous.
