The answer to this question is almost always "No."

I'm going to guess this is supposed to be a clever dig at Gamestop for taking games out of their boxes, rather than actually being so out of touch that he doesn't realize other retailers routinely leave them in, but I feel like it's falling a little flat.

Many stores do that, empty box in stores, games in a drawer behind the counter or in the back room.

Do many stores still do that? I guess I just havent seen it in a while except at GameStop. On base, they just leave them out. At Best Buy, they are in those personal lockbox things. At Wal-Mart and Target, they are just behind glass

Maybe for the really expensive special editions that come with extra stuff. Even then I've seen a few where the game is not included. Other than that, the flimsy case that holds the disc is not a box. That's what use to come in the box. Also the game use to be included on the disc.

It's about the move to digital and how in most cases when you do buy physical the disc you got doesn't actually contain the game and you still need to download it.

I think the last time I bought a game in a store it was in a plastic manacle, tethered to the shelf, and it took 15 minutes to find an employee to escort it to the register. After that I decided I'm just going to order online and have them shipped from now on.

Stores that are game stores, tend to have it behind the counter. Stores that sell all kinds of electronics, tend to have it in plastic cases here.

I cannot speak about Walmart equivalents here, as we do not have anything like that.

I see Other than GameStop, I havent seen many store that sell just video games recently And while GameStop usually takes games out of the case, they dont always. Ive definitely gotten new games in plastic from them. They are behind the counter, though. But still new and in plastic The only ones that arent were the use ones, or older ones Other than that, most stores around here are stores that have more than games. So, the games are either in the open, locked in cases, or behind glass

game still new.

people try on clothes at the store, and don't buy them... those are still new.
people test drive a car and don't buy it, it's still new.

the games don't even get played

I wouldn't call that "most cases." It certainly happens pretty often, but definitely not so often that you can actually claim that games aren't sold physically anymore, even without getting into the point that you are still making a physical purchase that gives you access to the game.

There have been cases of them being played, but for the most part I agree, and getting bent out of shape about them selling such games as "new" doesn't make much sense for anyone but collectors.

Maybe it's just my own misfortunes with game ownership that makes it seem more prevalent.

PC games definitely aren't sold that way. Toward the end even the boxed copies just had the Steam or Blizzard client and you could not make use of the files on the disc.

I guess with the switch you can install from the carts without needed anything extra. For PS and Xbox some of the systems can't make use of physical media. You need a specific system that has the optical drive.

I think my physical copy of Monster Hunter: World on PS4 would not let me start the game until I connected it to a network, updated, and downloaded the Iceborn expansion.

Yeah, this is much more true for PC than consoles. Physical PC games really haven't been a thing for many years, to the point where my optical drive isn't even plugged in because I got a new hard drive and I couldn't be bothered finding a different SATA cable.

That's not necessarily the most representative example. Even if you're playing solo, MH is intended to be a multiplayer game, and even without actually buying Iceborne, the number of updates and whatnot between the initial release and Iceborne coming out is substantial enough that I would expect an unpatched game to be incompatible with more up-to-date ones. That's not entirely dissimilar to being unable to log in to, say, WoW without installing the patch that corresponds to their newest expansion, whether you bought the expansion or not.

That said, day one patches are indeed quite common. They're often not a matter of downloading the game, though, but rather a reflection of the fact that the development and bug-fixing process often continues well past the game going gold, for better or worse.
