I was going to say for a kids show, but no in general this is a good conversation. It doesn't seems that shows of today really match this, level of discourse.

This should be the bar, it shouldn't be surprising that stories for children or a general audience have something to say rather than being a cacophony of images and sounds for no purpose

That was a pretty intentional bait-and-switch to keep the message on the same level without making it too hamfisted.

Like, TT was always great at layering things for kids and then for teens/adults.

The one scene did a better job articulating the whole Injustice angle than Injustice itself honestly.

Also I genuinely appreciated the Justice League's bold plots that deviated away from typical "punch bad guy until defeated" formula towards more mature problem solving solutions even if some weren't really interesting.

I still have both series and the animated Avengers series on a drive in my room. I love me some MCU, and a lot of the DCEU, but the medium will always be better when it is a cartoon. They can just do so much more.

The wonderful thing about JL is that a lot of the episodes are one offs....kind of. Everything still always leads to the same destination. They just show it through different lenses because the cast is so freaking large. But every character feels like they have a place. And some of the moment like this are just gut punching. It feels real.

[LFAQs-redacted-quote]

I used to not care about Superman and thought he was boring, since he was invulnerable and could do anything. The episode when Darkseid came to Earth and Superman gave his "world of cardboard" speech completely flipped my view of him. Just a few lines were enough.

Similar as in the Marvel comics, I used to dislike Quicksilver. Then in an issue of X-Factor, the team went to a shrink. He says that his daily life is like being stuck in line behind somebody who can't use an ATM. Totally new perspective that suddenly makes his attitude understandable.

My problem with these conversations in superhero media is that the line they draw always seems super arbitrary.

Every saturday morning these characters have no problem taking it upon themselves to beat the shit out of villains without any involvement from the authorities. They *already* operate outside the law. (With the sole exception of Adam West's Batman, who was officially deputized by the Gotham PD lol)

But then they'll randomly get into these stories where it's like "but what if superheroes bad?" and suddenly everyone becomes philosophers with morals they didnt have last week.

Funniest thing is that recently in the comics Superman had a story where he's like "Fuck it. I'm going straight to War World to free all the slaves and stomp Mogul into submission"

So when it's an alien government committing war crimes, everything's kosher. But when it's an earth government committing war crimes, it's "but what about the ethics of superheroism" >_>

(Also, the Superman Warworld saga was actually really fucking good and if you have the ability to check it out I recommend it)

I mean hypocrisy's not at all a foreign topic in these Superman stories or any comic book plot for that matter.

It's not, which is why I rarely can take any of these stories seriously.

Mainstream superheroes are just fundamentally unequipped to deconstruct their tropes with any degree of honesty.

Snyder wasn't allowed to do what he wanted so that's moot. He wanted MoS, Batman, MoS 2, and THEN BvS.

Could it have ended up being shit anyway? Yeah probably but the people who ruined it were executives trying to play catch up to marvel, not directors & producers.

He was great in that cartoon. I love the unapologetic pointing out of how fucked up the Justice League are but it's okay because "They're good guys."

Obviously it's a cartoon but yeah, that's terrifying.

I think Watchmen was an influence there.
