The Wii U was a fucking flop. Everyone was comparing it to the Sega Saturn and saying that the NX would be their Dreamcast.

But then the Switch came out and GOT DAMN, Nintendo is back on top. 114 million sold? Fifth best selling console of all time? Chad as FUCK. I knew they'd bounce back.

Indeed, it was the best thing they could have done. They were so much more successful with handhelds, so what better for their next home console to also be a handheld?

After Jerry's coma, the Dead. Started getting sloppy in the early 80s, getting less consistent with bad nights happening more often. Then Jerry had his coma, but after he came back they started rapidly improving. 89 and 90 were some of their best years. Especially that Spring and Summer '90.

It's amazing that Nintendo has lasted this long but it's only inevitable that Sony will eventually absorb them.

Nintendo made a pretty big comeback with the Wii after the GameCube too. But even then the GameCube wasn't as big of a flop as the Wii U and the Wii wasn't as big of a success as the Switch

Don't forget that Sony also picked up all the franchises that Nintendo just couldn't lose, like Final Fantasy and Castlevania

I was a Nintendo boy until the GameCube which I thought was crap.

Then did PS 1&2, to 360, to PS4, and finally back to Nintendo with the switch lol.

While the Wii U was a low point, Nintendo already had a success concurrent console in the 3DS. Hard to say they truly fell off

Also the Wii itself is still one of the best selling consoles of all time, so it's a single low point sandwiched between high points.

When ppl usually say 3DS was getting fucked, it's usually under the context that it could've been DS level of sales, but it ended up being about 2/3 of it. But the 3DS sold really well on its own merits

Because of smartphones. The fact it is, the 3DS wasn't stopping Nintendo from going downhill and the next dedicated handheld would have surely flopped, which is why they made the Switch a hybrid.

3DS did much better than the Vita, though; Sony should have never even bothered with that. The PSP did fine on its own but it still got rekt by the DS, like it wasn't even a contest by the late 2000s, and by that point, it was clear that smartphone apps would eventually overtake handhelds. Nintendo was still justified to release the 3DS because the DS was so popular, but it was obviously gonna do less than its predecessor. And if the 3DS was gonna do less than the DS, obvs the Vita would do less than the PSP. So Sony should have just saved themselves; no point in releasing another handheld that will sell way less than its predecessor on top of losing hard to its competition.

That's why Microsoft should just stop releasing Xboxes lol

It might have replaced it now, but it wasn't intended to at first.

Switch, Steam Deck, etc. have proven that smartphones have not replaced the desire for portable gaming devices.

Lol nah the Switch was always planned to replace the 3DS; obviously there wasn't room for both and as the 3DS was already getting pwnt by smartphones, the Switch was gonna replace it. Nintendo was just saving face
