Stagnant wages are a problem and I sympathize for those who feel the need to steal to survive but the vast majority of theft is NOT for non-essential items and NOT done out of necessity.

Traditionally, yes. People stole cosmetics, clothes, electronics, etc. Now the trends are shifting to food. I havent seen any graphs itemizing the goods that are reported missing but I hear them talking about stealing food now.

When times have changed this much, you cannot use a dated metric. People didnt used to steal food as often because the stores had not yet violated the social contract we had and food was affordable.

You know if it were just these large companies facing these high record thefts I wouldn't care, but the true is happening for small Ma and Pa shops. I have clients from Ma and Pa shops saying customers are getting even more combative when it comes to prices (you know always saying that Amazon sells it cheaper) and never asking about the quality of the product. It's got to the point where the Ma and Pa shops are more concern about getting the cheaper item than getting the quality ones.... and it makes sense because of how crazy inflation has gotten.

it made me learn the hard way that merit and hard work dont take you very far if you dont know the right people

Maybe they should permit their loss prevention people to actually stop thieves. Right now thieves are allowed to walk out the door and a police report just gets made. Guess what, ain't no police detective following up on a Walmart shoplifting.

It is ludicrously easy to steal stuff at Walmart. Maybe not downtown San Francisco easy, but damn.

I used to be a right asshole about it in my teens. Winter is easiest, because you can wear peacoats with like 8 pockets.

as someone who worked there at one point, most wal marts have almost no loss prevention. anyone that isn't a manager will get fired for approaching someone stealing stuff and doing anything more than watching them, and greeters can't do shit if you just ignore them

but the reason they can get away with that is they make an insane amount of money to negate what they lose from theft easily. what this sounds like is them throwing out a public facing excuse because they're about to start closing stores anyway
Never seen a walmart without loss prevention. They are there to stop major theft though.

Walmart doesn't pay enough and they literally tell their employees how to get on welfare. It's part of the training.

One other thing that I never see mentioned is the introduction of self-checkouts. Theyre not very difficult for millennials, Gen X and Gen Z to use because most of us have mild to serious interest in tech, but older generations sometimes have have a hard time with them.

My point is that its easy to make an honest mistake with the self checkout and accidentally steal something without realizing it. That rarely happened when the store paid workers to scan and bag your groceries. If you short staff, people are going to steal accidentally and intentionally, so I hope they learn their lesson and properly staff the stores.

We do follow up for whats its worth. Most big retail companies Record you shoplifting and burn it on a CD for detectives. The thing is, they usually come in once every 6 months or so, with everything because its not worth their time calling every hour for a shoplift. I worked on a case where a lady was going into Target every couple days and stealing like a grand worth of alcohol. She got a bunch of felony warrants issued out once she was identified

Thefts are becoming a major issue in America. Mom and pop shops are being hit as well. So many policies enable this behavior.

Not just stores. Porch pirates are a thing where thieves will tail delivery trucks and steal things as soon as its delivered. Catalytic converter theft from vehicles is seeing a huge uptick as well. CE is cool with stealing though so I'm sure they won't mind when they get robbed.

Thieves aren't discriminatory with who they steal from

At Sam's club there's always staff at the exit ready to scan a few items for if they've been purchased or not.

Walmart already has door greeters so giving them a scanner and 1 extra duty likely wouldn't break the bank.

Even without self checkout the problems with shoplifting still exists. The only way to really stop it would basically have some shitty system of locking mechanisms as if stores were the Jurassic Park tours. Since Lawsuits are a problem with stopping shoplifting.

Yes, shrink has always been an issue. That's indisputable. I don't understand what they expected when they introduced self-governance to the idea of shopping. Stealing is a crime of opportunity. You're never going to completely erase it.
