As I understand there are caps on leveling and XP share between all in the battle (not just those that do the fighting). My breaking point on the PSP version was when my party members couldn't deal more than single-digit damage to enemies in the story mission, the only nearby random enemies I could fight were nigh-unbeatable zombie knights, and I didn't see any way out of that. You still should keep multiple saves, as you could end up stuck in between multiple staged story battles. If you want to grind to be OP and beat all the story missions without any challenge, well you cant do that until you beat the game once. It makes the rest of the grind so much easier though. Crafting and skills take seconds to do. Got a new unit? Do one or two training battles on auto to get them up to snuff. They are like other classes and have a purpose. They are great at taking out the enemy backline. They do great damage to enemy archers and casters.
