Oh, Soccer.
It's just as lame as Superbowls being decided by field goals or some stupid penalty but at least it's riveting TV.

Its not though. A field goal is a score and while I dont know all that much about Football either but I believe the other team has a chance to match your field goal, assuming you're referring to overtime.

I dont think there is a better solution for soccer than penalties. You can have penalties, sudden death or keep adding on additional periods of regular game time.
Sudden death is like the dumbest thing(excluding absolute garbage like flipping a coin to determine a winner). Yes, it is ideal for the game to be determined by actually playing soccer, which is why they go to extra time first. But continuing to add more time is dangerous to the players and can fuck up scheduling if it goes on for days.

I figured someone else would have a better argument against it but I immediately thought of only giving players a short rest between games would be horrible. Then getting fans in for a surprise game would be a challenge along with all the crew involved in making a game happen. And tv networks would have to move stuff around.

Your idea is an infeasible logistical nightmare. You dont need to have another idea to know this. The current solution of penalty kicks is fine. They already tried golden goals (sudden death) and it turned into teams playing too defensively and games dragging on even more. These are players who are running for hours and getting injured. No need to keep them playing for so much longer or multiple days and wear them out like that. And thats aside from making the logistics of selling tickets, securing a stadium, staff, TV time slots, work

I do think that overtime should be set time but also sudden death. As in the first to score wins but if after 30 min of overtime no one has scored then it should go to penalty kicks.

Sudden death used to be a thing (called golden goal), but it was removed in 2006.

It often resulted in both teams being overly defensive and not willing to take any risks so the added extra time was just a boring wait for penalties.

I always thought for the final they should do something extra to try and prevent it going to penalties. Like perhaps another round of OT, or perhaps make it 10 on 5 for two ten minute rounds. With each team having a chance at having the bigger amount of players. If still tied then go to penalities. I know its a longer game and players are exhausted but its only for the finals and thats why i suggest the huge disparity between offensive and defensive players.

Penalties are a necessary evil. They are awesome despite sucking at the same time. They also affect the game meta so they have their place.

I do have a soft spot for hockey-type of penalty shootouts, where the player has to dribble from a certain distance and the keeper can move from his line. It allows for more variation and gives the keeper a greater chance.

There have been some experiments in the past (and I think it used to be standard in early MLS?) but it doesn't seem like there's currently any support for implementing it.

They did trial golden goals where first team to score in extra time would win. I liked that idea but not many did hence why it was cancelled.

Yeah as others have said golden goal is an awesome idea on paper but it didnt lead to quality play on the pitch because teams became scared to open up due to the consequences
