When Google can teach more in 10 minutes than what people 'learned' in years of school, there's major issues.

I'm thinking teen years really though, that's such a bizarre bubble of random insecure unqualified adults following a schedule, and that's what I was thinking of.

My P.E. teacher was teaching biology and sex ed. He taught me that the pill goes up the lady's wooha!

Still though, I don't know about primary school teachers getting mansion money.

We gave up on "tracking" decades ago, because it was "racist" somehow or something, while at the same time insisting on "mainstreaming" the developmentally-hindered Thus, all we have is an education system targeted slightly below the average student, that isn't really useful for anyone.

Everything you just said is wrong.

We still track at all levels, and a majority of students who are put on low tracks are students of color or don't speak english as their first language, which reinforces a white-dominated educational system. Most teachers are well aware of this and there are efforts to detrack and elevate all students but it's a sisyphus-ian task as we're overworked already and can't fight on the front lines of the battle against the structures that be.

We also don't change/lower standards or expectations for all students just because students with disabilities are also in the classroom. Those students have specific individualized education plans and/or 504 accommodations that allow them to participate in various capacities in the regular education classroom, which studies have shown correlate to improved learning outcomes for all students.

All of this.

Also IEP meetings were awesome. My coworkers always complained but it was awesome to see those young kids think critically about what worked for them and what didn't and get a chance for their voice to be heard.

I make $44000 and work about 1600 contracted hours per year. Not counting any work I take home with me, which can be anywhere from 3-5 extra unpaid hours per week.

So, if you think about 100-200 fewer work hours than the average salaried worker is worth docking a 6-figure salary to less than half of that for a position that requires professional licensure and a 4-year degree, then I don't think you value teachers much to begin with.

Rural Wisconsin. Thankfully I can afford to live where I teach so I'm not particularly struggling.

That being said I'm due for a promotion and I should be getting a salary schedule raise at the end of this year.

And I have it pretty easy where I am. Small schools may not pay as much but the kids are way more manageable and I have more freedom to teach how I want.

So I'm not boo-hooing for my sake. There are thousands of other teachers out there who are much worse off than I am and they're much more undervalued for their work.

I appreciate the sentiment. There's definitely a disconnect between administration and staff that needs to be addressed. A good principal supports their teachers first, and I'm thankful that I have a good one.
