I only played the first game and it was a fun God of War type game with some resemblance to Zelda for puzzles. It felt like it dragged on toward the end because it got repetitive, but worth a play through if you like that type of game play. Cant comment on the other 2-3 games in the series.

One is fun, I enjoyed it. Two I think has better gameplay for what I like. I also enjoyed it. I havent played the other two yet. I should. But Ive been so busy lately.

1 is a pure hack n slash with some puzzle elements. It can be pretty fun especially if you enjoy God of War type games. I found it fairly easy.

2 tries to be more open world, rpg style with the hack n slash combat. Unlike the first game where everything is pretty linear, you have more options here. Side Quests galore to level up and find better equipment. I found it pretty enjoyable, but some of the dungeons can be tedious.

never played 3.

The mechanics change pretty significantly for each game.

  • For Darksiders, Zero's description is pretty spot on. It's basically like God of War mixed with Zelda. Hack N Slash combat with big bosses and set pieces and some puzzles here and there.
  • For Darksiders 2, it still has hack and slash gameplay, but it changes to a more open world design with loot based progression. Enemies drop random loot based on their level and gear has different rarity tiers. Some fans of the first game absolutely hated the changes to this game.
  • For Darksiders 3, it takes a lot of inspiration from Dark Souls. And that's not speculation, the developers literally said they were inspired by Dark Souls. You no longer gain loot, but instead, you get stronger by gaining souls from defeated enemies, and if you die, you drop your unspent souls and have to go back to where you died to retrieve them. And by default, your attack animations were "locked" and couldn't be cancelled out of.
So about 2 weeks after the game launched, they added an update that allowed players to change the combat to "classic" mode that allowed you to use dodge to cancel out of most attacks (some attacks still can't be cancelled out of). This one is easily my most hated in the series, because I don't think Dark Souls style gameplay fits with the rest of the series.

  • Darksiders Genesis plays in an isometric view, so it got a lot of comparisons to Diablo, but the gameplay is actually more similar to Darksiders 1. It's not a full on GoW style hack n slash, but the progression feels similar to Darksiders 1 and there's platforming and puzzles.

1- Great with my hype is going to explode ending imo

2 - different, but still great

3- different again, but not great, but still pretty good.

Haven't played the next one, but it is very different.

Ive only played 2 free on PS Plus. Its like a not-quite-as-good Zelda. It was pretty fun. The plot gets kind of weird and stupid towards the end.
