I would assume it means that they trust you to get your work done that needs done and if you have free time and want to take off you can.

Its more of a way to trick you into less PTO as youre more likely to second think or feel guilty if you take too much rather than accrue/use what youve earned

I'm paranoid enough to think it's bait.
The people who are in the office mostly fucking around on facebook are going to be less likely to be laid off than the ones who actually partake of "unlimited PTO", regardless of actual productivity.

it is bait for two reasons

[LFAQs-redacted-quote]

this is one

the other is, studies have shown people with unlimited PTO are far less likely to make use of it at a level that would be commensurate with their peers who actually have tracked PTO. i.e. I have four weeks of PTO a year, but a peer of mine in a different company with unlimited PTO is less likely to actually use all four weeks

The job I left changed to unlimited PTO. My old boss complained that people were actually using it.

BTW I'm not saying this to challenge the "people will use less" posts, I agree with those.

Its a way for companies to avoid having to pay you for your unused vacation hours. Its a scam by employers to reduce compensation and potential employees accept it because its packaged as a positive thing.

Its a scam. Most companies wont let you actually use it even if you are meeting their goals, because you can always accomplish more, and the companies that do let you use it it saves them from having to pay you PTO when you leave.

When you have vacation time they have to have that money available for you. So it needs to be on the books. Its why companies dont let you bank as much as you want and have a cap. But if its unlimited you never actually accrue any and they cant just say they dont have any on the books.

It has its pros and cons. As others have mentioned, you dont get paid those hours banked if you leave.

On the positive side, you dont have to wait to accrue vacation time to take it or worry about how many sick days you have left. I have unlimited PTO at my new company and was able to take last Friday as PTO to do my citizenship interview no problem. At a company with accrued PTO I would have been unpaid for that.

Apparently people generally take less PTO if they have unlimited PTO

Really? At the two companies I worked for they let you go into the negatives so long as at the end of the year you were above 0
