Houndour is literally only available in a single route.....in Kanto.....only at night.....and it has a 5% encounter rate in G/S (Crystal upped it to 20%)

You can't get any dark types until Kanto iirc. Luckily GATR can just bite everything.

You can get Umbreon if you evolve the Eevee you get in Goldenrod, and Sneasel was moved to the Ice Path in Crystal, but other than that, yeah, they're all post-Johto.

You can evolve Eevee to Umbreon, and you get your first Eevee before the 4th gym.

Murkrow and Houndour are both outside Celadon and Sneasel and Larvitar are both at Mt Silver right? What a waste of the new type and the new pokeymans.

Larvitar is worse. You cant get him until the end of the game.

Just play Crystal Clear instead, I started with Houndour in that and had a fucking blast.

You can get a Dratini from the Game Corner I think. It might be crazy expensive, but hey it's there. I think you can get Bagon in a cave you visit before even beating the villain team in RSE.

There were very few Dark types altogether in gen 2. Houndour/Houndoom (like you mentioned), Umbreon, Tyranitar, Sneasel (which didn't evolve until gen 4), and Murkrow (which didn't evolve until gen 4), and that's it. This makes me realize that Houndour holds the distinction of being the only not-fully-evolved Dark type at this particular point in time. Neat.

I feel like the Dark type overall was cobbled together very quickly as a response to the Psychic type imbalance of gen 1, and they didn't get the chance to make very many designs for it yet. It got better representation in gens 3 and 4.

Umbreon was available after picking up the Eevee in Goldenrod. That was it though; all the others are post-league.

If you can consider anything other than paradoxes in gen 9 to be a pseudo legendary, then you can get them without any badges. >_>

I forgot Lavitar isnt until Mt. Silver lol. Imagine having to catch that and grind it up to lvl 55 or whatever

My favorite Pokemon is Houndoom so you could imagine my pain when he's either only available late or not at all while you're doing regular playthrough's of the game. I wanna say it was Emerald, one of the Gen 4 games, and XY that were decent with Houndoom availability.

Nope, it was terrible. Not only because it couldn't make use of its STABs, but it had a crappy physical moveset as well. That plus ice being a garbage typing to have.

Kanto wasn't even in G/S originally, until Iwata came in and compressed the game. So where was Houndour originally going to show up if Kanto hadn't been in the game?

Probably somewhere in Johto. Route 7 in Kanto is random as fuck for it to appear

I'd say Burned Tower is pretty likely to have been the Dark location. Murkrow and Houndour, anyway. Thematically fitting, and a good location considering Morty is nearby and would be ideal for players to test them on.

R/B/Y had like 3 ghosts(all from the same evolution) so I guess having a few dark does make sense if you think about it like that lol.

I'd like to trade our surplus of water types for some other types pls.

Gen 2 only adding 1 ghost and 1 dragon was pretty lame

For as far as I can remember, I always like for all 6 members of my team to be new Pokmon only introduced in the region of the game Im playing.

I dont remember if I did that in GSC since its been so long, but I wouldnt be surprised if you cant even do that in Gen 2 and are forced to use at least a couple Kanto Pokmon in your team (all before the E4/champion of course), since Gen 2 had some of the worst distribution of Pokmon with the dark types being a prime example.

I remember when I was a kid, I was trying to get a Houndour in that patch of grass next to Celadon City. I feel like I was grinding for hours, but eventually I got one, and it was a fucking shiny. First ever natural shiny, and it was the exact fucking Pokemon I had been waiting for.

I hit it once, it was a critical hit and it fainted.

I grinded for like five more minutes before I gave up. I was absolutely crestfallen.

Sure. Starter, Tyranitar, entei, raikou, suicune, crobat, ampharos, scizor, steelix, quagsire, slowking, politoed, heracross, houndoom, there's plenty of good options. Even removing the Kanto only ones, there's plenty of good options
