There are some tv shows/ games / etc. that I just don't try to get people into because it falls into that category.

Truly great games are only understood 100 hours in at the very least

Final Fantasy 14 except it's like 100+ hours and never gets good.

Basically everyone that likes FF12 and 13

Same with manga. One Piece for instance. Although I'll say that's one series I actually am glad to have taken a second look.

The first look was 4kids and it looked stupid. THen my friend had me read his shonen jump and I read up to Arlong Park. Such a good thing I tried it because now I'm obsessed.

dmc 3 started to get really fun for me about like 150-200 hours into the game when I started to develop my button-mashing playstyle.

for runescape i had put in like 2k hours till it clicked and i started to enjoy skilling. prior to that i mainly just hung around lumbridge and falador pre-ge era and then post-ge i hung out at clan wars and the ge and used it as chat room.

I mean, if I genuinely believe that about a game I don't generally try to recommend them to just anybody.

Like Xenoblade 2, it legitimately gets good after halfway through the game, like 30+ hours in. But I'm not gonna sit here and say "give it a chance even if you hate it, I guarantee you'll love it after that point!" I'll only tell people to keep going with it if they're having some kind of enjoyment with it to begin with.

Games that get good after x amount of time are poorly made, full stop.

Games can, and should, get better as they progress. But the beginning is the part of the game everybody plays, make that fun, too. And if you cant, rethink your game, devs.

It's really asking a lot for someone to watch/play something they actively dislike for 10 hours just to get to the good parts.

Doesn't matter how awesome the back half is, if the first half is ass, you can't blame people for not bothering with it.

This, pretty much.

Some would defend RPGs for starting slow because "that's the nature of RPGs" but like...there's ways to make the beginning hours more interesting, and it doesn't always have to be action-packed sequences. If so many RPGs get trapped in this kind of pitfall then that's an issue and is why the genre in general is more niche than it could be. Not everybody has the patience to sit through a game that seems uninteresting in the hopes it gets good.
