I just noticed something today and now I can't unsee it. Does no one else see it? Maybe I'm wrong, but there's no way to prove it either way. I need to see if anyone here picks up on it without me pointing it out.

No. It's the plane thing. There were no planes in 1864 or whenever the first season is set.

I mean, that could be a "bird" thing too, if your reasoning is "airplanes didn't exist back then so how can she be doing that?"

-edit- Oh, well you replied before I finished this lol.

Eh.... It's pretty clear Melissa Gilbert is doing the plane thing here.

But, like I said in the first post, there's no definitive answer as to whether this is correct or not. Right or wrong. None of us can prove it to be true or false. Maybe.... kids did the arms out thing in 1864. Maybe, it didn't become a thing until planes existed. But either way it's more about what you feel to be true rather than what we can knowingly prove.

It's an alternative world, where Aeroplanes are in common use -- For example, when Mr. Edwards first shows up in Walnut Grove, he goes to the mill to meet Charles and Almanzo. A jet contrail is clearly visible in the sky in the background, and in the episode "Meet Me at the Fair," on a hot air balloon they have FAA-regulated numbers (N4011A), a system that didn't come into play until the 1940s (because it's administrated by the Federal Aviation Administration, which only happened after planes).

I found this answer on a fan site...

I remember her saying something about there being bees all over the place when they were filming that, though.....And right after they filmed it, Michael asked her if she had been pretending to be a bird or a plane when she was doing that, because one of the set assistants pointed out that it looked like she was pretending to be a plane. He told her that if she was being a plane, they'd have to re-film it, because planes weren't around when Laura was little....and Melissa said that she thought about those bees and, "I told him I was a bird". So who knows.

So she was asked outright and said she imitating a bird? I guess that settles it.

Cause she didn't want to do reshoots.

But regardless, I'm still not convinced kids actually did the arms out thing before planes. Maybe they did. But it seems like somewhere in human history there would be documented evidence of that, and I've not seen it yet. If someone has evidence then please share with the class.

Mr Edwards was in the pilot episode, long before Almanzo was in the series. What is this first shows up in Walnut Grove garbage?

He actually was returning to WG after losing his marriage to alcoholism. Victor French was a regular for the first two (?) seasons. His character moved away and became a guest star before returning toward the end and being a regular on the spinoff Little House: A New Beginning. Fun fact: his adopted daughter Alicia was played by Kyle Richards of Real Housewives of BH fame. Her sister Kim was in at least one episode, too, as a totally different character.

The bigger issue with LHotP was all those trees endemic to Southern California, not Minnesota!
