It is sustainable if you dont bank on megastars (of which these days there are very few) and give people the space to do other things. To use a Star Wars example, Genevieve OReilly has been Mon Mothma in everything for seventeen years. You can definitely do it without killing the actors.

That's a great example. She seems to have real passion for the character still, and Andor really reaped the benefits of having her still in place.

Watchmen characters had like 20 years to surpass the originals they were based on. I think I'd probably go for The Boys and to a lesser extent Invincible to show there's an audience for some edgier expys.

This "same actor thing" and trying to maintain continuity across games, animation, TV, movies etc all seems really farfetched. Unless they just give up on movie stars and can somehow lock some nobodies into doing all this work for 20 years, it just seems more work than will ever be sustainable.

And that's just acting talent. Imagine actually trying to main continuity and tone....

it really depends on how much any one character is used across all this stuff. Marvel is managing to do the same thing with its actors (not 100% with the animation, but they did get a bunch of the movie people to be in What If?), so DC should be able to do it too.

realistically the biggest names will sit out the animation stuff and theyll get soundalikes like What If? did, but a dude on the level of whoever is playing Blue Beetle will probably be willing to do the voice work too

Yeah well those werent movies. And I mean to the average person Nite-Owl looks like a copy of Batman, not Blue Beetle, same for Doctor Manhattan and Superman.

I feel like people dont care about even blatant expies as long as the story is obviously subverting the standard formula in some way.

The Authority - and its companion in "What's So Funny About Truth, Justice and the American Way?" really don't subvert the formula. They embrace the inevitability of a rash, harsher brand of justice that was emblematic in what has become the sort of rhetoric now emblemized in far-right conservative circles. Starting with Kingdom Come, there's a logic in the development to the point where Superman as a comic just poses the question for Superman, flat out. It's really great stuff, but I'll admit I'm a huge fan of that era of comics.

I like the idea of Booster also hocking products from non-DC WB properties, like Scooby Snacks, The Prancing Pony, Every-Flavored Beans, etc. Just on his costume though, and constantly changing.

Booster Gold absolutely needs to have a ridiculous amount of product placement. I will be upset if ads for Pepsi aren't shoved down my throat every five minutes

Man 52 is still one of the greatest things DC has ever done

Booster Gold should definitely almost resemble an adam sandler or will ferrell flick with its product placement

i heard a report/rumor that greg berlanti was working on a booster gold movie years ago. guess that never happened, though.

Went and read Woman of Tomorrow due to the announcement. Was really good! Not sure how suited it is to a movie though.

I do think it would work better as a series than a movie, but we'll see!

If you enjoyed it, absolutely go read "Superman: Up in the Sky" also from the same writer Tom King. One of my favorite Superman stories ever written.

The two best parts of the comic were the constant narration and the godlike artwork. Latter is much harder to pull off in a movie setting, and I'm not sure they'll commit to the narration. Hope it's done well regardless though.

I'll take a look at Up In The Sky too.

The context was some group of people did something bad (Think it was white nationalists)

And LMS said this made him angry and that group deserved to be holocausted more than the Jews did

it happened in the politics topic. and yeah, the best part was that in his "apology," he just repeated what he said about how much certain groups "deserve" to be holocausted.

Gunn said he wanted a younger Superman for his movie, but were getting a Batman who is old enough to have already had Damian and extended Bat-family members.Superman and Bruce have basically always been around the same age though I think so I wonder how thats going to work for this movie universe. Are we getting a Superman who is just learning the ropes and a Batman who is already like peak experience?

Batman was already way older than Superman in Batman v Superman

That's actually sort of what bappened during New 52, because Morrison's run got interrupted they had to deal with both the Batfamily existing and Superman just starting out, so Batman had been active years before Supes was. It was all very handwavey though and I don't think they were more than 5 or 10 years apart even with that.

Come to think of it, Morrison was also writing the young rookie Superman during that period too. If we're just getting the Grant Morrison Cinematic Universe I'm down.

They've already said the Superman movie is a flashback movie.

I dont think Batman needs to be super-old for Batfamily to work, just 30s. Thats still older than Superman will be but not a colossal difference.

Also looks like James Mangold may be directing Swamp Thing which is not what I expected, but cool.

It's a step down from most Morrison comics - which means it was still a Top 10er for the New52.

It's solid, but I think it gets a bad rap because it was supposed to be "the new Superman!" fitting into a new continuity, instead of being something more akin to an Elseworlds which is what it feels like it should be doing. If you take it for what it is - Morrison pulling Golden Age Supes into the modern era - it's pretty good. But I don't think it really gets a chance to breathe, there's some concepts like SUPERDOOM (the evil, Corporate IP version of Superman from another Earth) that were neat but underutilized (gee I wonder why).

All this to say, it's definitely a concept worth going back to imo. But my bias is I think the best way to "update" Superman for the modern era is to reintroduce more of those Golden Age roots. See also "Superman Smashes the Klan" which is one of the freshest takes we've had in a while despite literally being a story for children.

Looked back at the New 52 launch titles to see which ones were actually new series and not just ongoing series pretending to reset, and put together which ones I think actually stood the test of time in my memory.
