Why would they? There wasn't really reason to be suspicious of it until it started meandering over various inland sites, and shooting something like this down isn't exactly free (both in the simple cost of dispatching a plane and in the diplomatic sense).

Correct. It's not over the US until it's like 10 miles off the coast or something like that. At which point it might be too late to fire it down depending on the trajectory.

There is the debris, and what could be in the debris. What if there was a biological or radioactive payload. You don't want that spread over land. It is also likely why they want people to stay away from any of the debris that does wash up on shore now. We do need a way to detect, intercept, move somewhere safe before bringing these balloons down before they can get over US land. This balloon went in at the Canadian coast line, so shooting it down in their waters and over their land may not have been acceptable to Canada.

Not at all. Shooting it down as a first choice would be a largely unprovoked act of aggression. Shooting it down when it became clear that it was suspicious and the owner refused attempts to resolve the matter diplomatically is no longer unprovoked and is instead a simple matter of protecting the country (though, again, I don't know how much of a genuine threat this one balloon was among the myriad other forms Chinese espionage takes).

I do believe going out into another sovereign nation and shooting stuff down over their territory is going to cause problems, that is all.

Gotta love how dumb people were trying to shoot this thing out of the sky when it was 60,000 feet off the ground. Unless you have the most powerful firearm ever devised and some rig that makes it even stronger they would be lucky to get within 50,000 feet of it.

I'm not even some gun expert and I would have scoffed at anyone trying to shoot it down.

Yeah, given that shooting it down involved one of the air force's most advanced fighter jets and an AtA missile, rather than any sort of surface anti-air weaponry (even the stuff available to the military), I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that no consumer-grade firearm is going to come close. The world record for a confirmed sniper kill is like 3000 metres, which is only about 10,000 feet, and that's more or less a level shot.

I don't understand why they didn't use the 20mm Vulcan cannon to shoot it down instead of wasting a very expensive missile. Shooting up the bag with the cannon would probably cause it to come down much more slowly, so more of the payload could be recovered.

A rail gun would have been better TBH

Probably altitude issues. 65,000 feet is the absolute maximum altitude an F-22 can handle, so cruising at a more comfortable altitude and letting the unmanned, less expensive missile handle the last few thousand feet was probably a less risky option than trying to gun it down.

I did refer to him by placing a city name before his user name "Zeus" because he had called Biden Beijing Biden.

Apparently that was "harassment" I honestly am not sure what was the harassment, the city name or the @ because neither seemed appropriate for moderation to me.

We are back into this cycle where I no longer seem to understand what is and isn't ok under the rules. I can't begin to understand why I was modded, I contested it and they confirmed it without even explaining why I was modded.

Apparantly that lunatic Taylor Greene brought another chinsese spy balloon into the country. She was walking around Capitol Hill with it. She needs to be brought up on treason charges its clear she (I mean it) is a spy for the Chinese.

It actually entered through Alaska, but there isn't a ton of international water between Alaska and Russia, and shooting things down in or near Russian airspace would be an absolute disaster right now.
