Does China or Japan have the more toxic work culture?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/996_working_hour_system

The 996 working hour system (Chinese: 996) is a work schedule practiced by some companies in the People's Republic of China. It derives its name from its requirement that employees work from 9:00 am to 9:00 pm, 6 days per week; i.e. 72 hours per week.[1][2][3][4][5][6] A number of Mainland Chinese internet companies have adopted this system as their official work schedule. Critics argue that the 996 working hour system is a violation of Chinese Labour Law and have called it "modern slavery".[7][8]

I thought I had it bad, but this 996 working hour system really is basically modern day slavery. From what I've heard, Japan is not far off with its rampant karoshi (people overworking themselves to death). Meanwhile, Westerners complain about their 40-hour work weeks. I don't know much more about China or Japan. They're both clearly overworked compared to the Western world, but which one has it worse?

Considering all the work place injuries and deaths that happen in Chinese factories and just what is at least just as long of hours, if not worse than even Japan, it has to be China.

At least Japan has their equivalent to OSHA with Japanese Industrial Safety and Health Act, so I'll assume their workplace environment is much more safe.

Just because it's worse somewhere else doesn't mean it's no longer bad.

They both seem about the same. Japan has similar work schedules, but a culture that priorities hard work over mental health. Capsule hotels and many bars are made specifically for salarymen who don't have time to go home after work. It's also taboo to suggest depression and suicidal thoughts are biological, and many psychologists suggest working harder.

When I was there three years ago, they had just started playing soft music and bird sounds in subways in an effort to make people change their minds about jumping onto the tracks.

996 system reminds of that weird rating system you guys use here when you rate a woman like 817 or some unnecessarily convoluted nonsense.

Japan (By Law, these are minimums):

China -- the following is by Government Mandate (again, minimums):
Work Tenure:
Less than one year --- No leave
1-10 years --- 5 days leave
10-20 years --- 10 days leave
Over 20 years --- 15 days leave

America:
There are no state or federal laws that require employers to give workers any time off for holidays.

Hmm.... I wonder... Which country has it worse. I'd say America is definitely up there, though.

No Paid Holidays guaranteed at all by federal law, that's really, really bad....

Yes. It also has slavery as late as 2020 (which is just the date of the latest article on it, not the removal of slavery).
