They can have all the creative freedom they want elsewhere. The makers of those games are releasing them on a console owned by a company that doesn't want that content, so tough luck.

An easy comparison is Twitter. People bitch and moan about free speech and censorship there, but a private entity is well within their rights to not allow something on their platform. They can't outlaw that elsewhere though, so if you want to say fucked up shit (or make titty games) just go to another social media platform (or release your game on a platform where it won't be censored).

Like a pure evil government trying to whitewash their human rights abuses by getting involved in video games and sports?

There's no whitewashing their human rights abuses here. This is purely about making money, and investing their portfolio for the future. That's all this is. Video games are the biggest source of entertainment revenue in the world. Nothing even comes close. The Saudis are smart to invest in companies that have strong financial future, because they can't rely on their oil reserves forever.

I mean you didnt but thats kind of why people are making comments like "does buying mario games mean you hate women?".

I simply stated I was more concerned with Americas influence on Nintendo, specifically Japanese games rather then Saudi Arabia which no one respects other then for their oil.

Come to think of it Nintendo Switch recently was beating out Steam for censorship (some games released on there were blocked on Steam).

I mean, expect to see more of that, and also for...nothing to really change.

They're basically going with a shotgun approach to video game investment. They're throwing cash at everything and hoping to hit it big.

They just bought stock in the company, it's not like they're running Nintendo now. Bad people invest in every company, if you boycotted them all you'd have nothing left.

People don't really understand that. I'm sure if you combed through people who own stock in even things like grocery stores you'd find some awful people or people with questionable ties.

Nothing really since this is the equivalent of a normal person buying a few stocks of a big company: They'll get some money out of it but they don't own the company, they own a part of it together with the other shareholders, for them to own the company they would need to buy all of the stocks like they pretty much did with SNK and i don't think they legally can do that.

I don't think anyone should boycott. Just kick SA the fuck out. But that would require ethics and that doesn't exist in the current economy.

Sadly that's the price of a publicly traded company. But I'd go as far as to boycott once they start some like erasure to appease the Saudis

America has been enabling them for a while just to play the long game of eventually dominating the oil scene. But initially it was like they were content with giving a third world country a bunch of money they don't know what to do with, but it's been a decade of that, and a new generation of rich babies who know exactly what to do with all that money have been developing these countries up the ass and are allowed to impose upon anybody with their extremely outdated but self beneficial standards. So like the drug cartels, there are about to be a lot of bad people that are legitimately rich and unable to fail.

In all honesty, I doubt Saudi Arabian influence will be present in the games themselves. The version of Fire Emblem released in the middle east may remove same-sex relationship options. The cleavage, the lesbians, and everything else will still be present in other regions. (At least what the international market doesn't already censor.)

The real problem is simply that world entertainment is being used to fund an oppressive regime. We already give them money for gas, but that's the reason we should've been looking into alternative fuel sources anyway. I never want to play into people's prejudices, but one would think that right-wingers would be eager to make electric cars work since it would mean being less dependent on fuel sources monopolized by Arab countries. Instead, many of them cling to fossil fuels to spite those who want to save the world from global warming.

I'd ride a bicycle if I could.
I can't boycott everything.

I can't say I refuse to play Nintendo games, watch Disney movies, go to whatever market chain they're going to buy into, etc. I might buy a pack of batteries only to find out they own stock in that particular store. That's the reality of the situation.

I don't think America's any closer to living under fanatical religious law. But I think that the path for women in Saudi Arabia to escape from it is set to widen considerably.
