Rogue lite, I know people get them mixed up, but if you aren't doing grid and turn based movement and combat in your game, you're just a roguelite, not a rogue like. Stop confusing the mechanic of getting stronger after every death with rogue. The only reason why it's a consideration is often in roguelike games you die over and over and learn and get stronger with knowledge not with actual game mechanics/metaprogression making the game easier. Hence why we have the term roguelite.

Eden and Crypt of the necrodancer dance a very fine line honestly, but something like Hades is definitely a roguelite.

Roguelike games:
Rogue
Nethack
Tales of Maj'Eyal
Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup
Cataclysm Dark Days Ahead (one of my favorites)
Cogmind (Other favorite)

Iffy Roguelikes and seem to be evolving in this direction in modern days (Lack metaprogression but have permanent death where you start over and use previous knowledge to progress further)
Crypt of the Necrodancer (meant to be played all in one run not with diamonds)
One Step from Eden
Noita
Slay the Spire
FTL
Binding of Isaac

Roguelite (has metaprogression but you start over a bit stronger)
Probably whatever most people call roguelike in this topic lol.
Hades
Dead Cells
Star Renegades
Darkest Dungeon

There's a difference learn it please, because when I try to look for roguelikes I roll my eyes whenever I get told Hades is the best roguelike ever. Fuck that I want my turn based grid based take 50 years calculating what to do and then die because some stupid bullshit I didn't account for killed me.

The only new "roguelike" I've seen so far that is a nice take on the theme overall is surprisingly Cogmind. I love that game and it's a refreshing take on roguelikes in general but it's also 2017. You'd think a newer ACTUALLY good one has come out, but in general you have garbage. I mean I guess Jupiter Hell is "new" but that's just a 3d remake of DoomRL.

Just to elaborate I don't think roguelites suck, I enjoy them too, but let's categorize things correctly. I love Star Renegades and played the shit out of it when I got it. Same for Hades I completed most of the game along with Dead Cells. But let's not use the terms incorrectly and fuck up shit. So many people get the terms wrong and it's annoying. Like calling Mario Odyssey and RPG because you play the role of Mario. I think we all know what it means to be an RPG and YEAH there is a difference between JRPGs and WRPGs. Let's not just lump the terms and ruin definitions.

Sounds like the opinion of someone who only plays AAA games, and eats all of them up like candy despite having some of the most safe/ boring mechanics in the industry. Every thing got to be an open world game with a magical gps to navigate to massive empty world thats padded out with 100 boring fetch quests and shallow protagonists that feel like they came off the assembly line of a live action Disney movie.

Lite. It has meta progression and it isn't based on a D&D style dungeon romp. Spelunky is also -lite as it shares nothing with Rogue other than the randomized zones.

Binding of Isaac
Binding of Isaac: Rebirth
Rogue Legacy
Rogue Legacy 2
Crypt of the Necrodancer
One Step from Eden
20XX
30XX
FTL
Enter the Gungeon

Also trying to draw a line between "Roguelikes" and "Roguelites" is a pointless endeavor imo. It really only seems to be argued by purists who think the latter are inferior games because they don't have the same/as many hardcore elements as the former.

I always enjoy the people who have never played an actual roguelike to be the ones who don't care about what makes a roguelike. Seems legit in my eyes that they know what makes a roguelike according to them.

I'm not sure if you've read everything I said fully because you decided to make it a purity argument. I explicitly made a point about that because I expected this kind of inane statement to pop up as well.

Again I made comparisons to JRPGs and WRPGs. If I was looking for a JRPG you wouldn't go and recommend Skyrim or Mass Effect for example.

That's all I'm trying to say here. Roguelites can be fun, but let's categorize them right. Again I hope you read through everything this time, because I'd really like for you to point out when I said roguelites are inferior games. Also, please keep in mind that I tried to contribute to the conversation and didn't blanket criticize games.

Not all actual roguelikes are difficult. Jupiter Hell can be a simple game to get into, and Tales of Maj Eyal is one of the "easier" ones to get into in terms of difficulty. But it's still functionally a roguelike. Dungeon mans is another simple one and oh, speaking of newer games...

Rift Wizard is a wonderful new roguelike that is a good thematic spin on what it means to be a roguelike. Came out in 2021. It's difficult but it's kind of a puzzler type game. So there are still new good roguelikes coming out in this day and age.

Hades isn't a Roguelike, it's a Roguelite.

And Dead Cells is better anyway.

Hades is like:
  • 6 weapons, with minor variations based on aspect / Daedalus hammer.
  • Enter tiny room and kill everything. Repeat forever.
  • Not a lot of variety on how you progress.
  • Permanent upgrades are all stat buffs.
  • Need to beat the game like 18 fucking times with each weapon like holy shit calm the fuck down.
  • Annoying NPCs you have to constantly talk to because plot.
  • Already moving on to Hades 2
Dead Cells:
  • Huge wide open areas. Kill or just rush to the exit.
  • Tons of different weapons and items. Every single one has a unique attack chain.
  • Rewards are predominantly for exploring to find scrolls and secrets.
  • Lots of different ways to progress through the world map dramatically changing the kind of enemies, bosses, and treasure you'll encounter.
  • No permanently upgradeable stats, your upgrades are new abilities, new items, and new functions like shop rerolls, item quality, and flask.
  • Only have to beat the game 7 (6) times. After that just grind to finish unlocks by resetting after the first boss.
  • Still getting DLC and updates.
