Reading Memories of Ice right now. K'Chain Che'Malle are probably one of my favorite fantasy creatures ever - superfast undead raptors with sword arms? Fuck yeah. Finally seeing Quick Ben unleash and just mow down people is satisfying as fuck, or seeing the waves of starving hordes tear through cities.

That series is amazing but also frustrating and difficult. I know Memories of Ice is often a favorite, but my favorites were Deadhouse Gates, The Bonehunters, and The Crippled God.

You planning on reading the ICE novels as well? Ties up a lot of loose ends but better to alternate between authors vs doing all one and then the other. I think just reading by publication date order works.

has there ever been a more annoying fantasy character than Quick Ben?

I might, but I've been working on this series for years and I'm only on book 3 so I don't want to get ahead of myself lol

I read all 16 in a row. I couldn't do that now. I was also unhappily married at the time so it wasn't like I had good real-life alternative to a torturous read.

well okay, I guess that's fair
I liked Malazan, I was just frustrated by the constant authorial teasing, with characters having realizations that are never explained
or rather, as a fairly unobservant reader I mostly forgot about them by the time they were explained, leaving me with a nagging sense of uhhh ... unresolution?
I liked the series more on the second read where I could catch things like that better, and was left with a more positive impression of Erikson's writing

I 100% agree. I remember in Deadhouse Gates how much I LOATHED every part of Felisin because it seemed everyone around her knew everything and just didn't want to explain it.

This is still on my to-do list after like 5 years of having the series just staring at me from my bookshelf.

Probably the best endings in fantasy, even above Stormlight Archive
