I'm guessing the very first thing he did was swim back from Mallet Island but then what?
Was he insane or feral in these years and just trying to collect himself? On a long, gritty search for the Yamato?
Do half-demons need to eat and sleep all that much?

I was originally wondering how he survived DMC1 but in DMC3 after giant purple blob Arkham is defeated, he loses the Force Edge and he reverts to human the same way you'd cancel a devil trigger, so I'm guessing after Nelo Angelo was defeated the original Vergil re-formed and landed somewhere nearby.

At what point did he decide to make the silly talking electric bird into one of his imaginary friends?

wasn't vergil Nelo Angelo in DMC1, i can't remember what happened to him in that game.

Yes, for most of the game he's Mundus' zombie knight servant thing. Seeing Dante's amulet gradually causes his memories/sanity to come back. After you beat him a third time he explodes into a big blue light and he isn't seen again.

By the time DMC5 happens, Vergil's become a haggard, withered version of his former self wearing a raggedy cloak.

If you're talking DMC4, that's meant to show him visiting Fortuna in the years prior to DMC3. Aside from the manga stuff where they show him and Dante's youth, that's the earliest chronological depiction of Vergil.

Also I know the residents of Fortuna were a little weird but who in their right mind would lovingly embrace traumatized, decaying post-Nelo Vergil?

After that, he wandered around In hell until he could get out. Then he ripped of Neros arm and got Yamato back. Then split his human and demon self apart, with the human half getting familiars

That makes me wonder what was left of him.
Has he given up on it and started looking for an escape at this point or is he still dead set on finding more power down there?
He hasn't got his sword (Can't remember how it left him and ended up broken by DMC4. Mundus destroyed it in the post DMC3 fight maybe?), he's a physical and emotional mess, what's he going to accomplish wandering round in hell? Probably has huge trust issues after Arkham played him too.

It almost makes me think he's actually stuck there until all the Argosax stuff in DMC2 goes down, another big name from the demon world is destroyed and a portal between worlds is opened again. He lucks into a chance to escape thanks to Dante?
