A new bill introduced in the Iowa Legislature would rewrite Iowa's child labor law to allow teens to work in previously prohibited jobs so long as they are part of an approved training program.

Bill also would shield businesses from liability
The bill exempts businesses from civil liability if a student is sickened, injured or killed due to the company's negligence. A business also would be free of civil liability if a student is hurt because of the teen's negligence on the job or is injured traveling to or from work.
A company could face fines of up to $10,000 for violations under the bill, but the state's labor commissioner could reduce or waive the penalty.

https://www.commondreams.org/news/iowa-child-labor-laws

Labor advocates on Tuesday decried a business-backed bill introduced by Republican state lawmakers in Iowa that would roll back child labor laws so that teens as young as 14 could work in previously prohibited jobs including mining, logging, and animal slaughteringa proposal one union president called dangerous and "just crazy."

Senate File 167, introduced by state Sen. Jason Schultz (R-6) would expand job options available to teensincluding letting children as young as 14 work in freezers and meat coolers and loading and unloading light tools, under certain conditions.

Teens under 18 would still be generally barred from employment in fields including mining, logging, demolition, and meatpacking, and from operating potentially dangerous machinery and equipment including circular saws, guillotine shears, and punching machines.

However, the Des Moines Registerreports the proposed law contains "an entirely new section" that "would allow the Iowa Workforce Development and state Department of Education heads to make exceptions to any of the prohibited jobs for teens 14-17 'participating in work-based learning or a school or employer-administered, work-related program.'"

Because they want kids too dumb to realize how dangerous these jobs are. That's also why they want the liability shield.
Also there's no need to pay for benefits, as they're on their parents' insurance and forbidden from full-time anyway.

Lmao, no. I said I hated reactionaries.

In political science, a reactionary or a reactionist is a person who holds political views that favor a return to the status quo ante, the previous political state of society, which that person believes possessed positive characteristics absent from contemporary society.

I get that kids could work these jobs but why are children being considered for this? Does Iowa have a dwindling population of age-appropriate hires?

Alright, I guess wages could be a potential reason as to why. This beckons the question: why not raise wages to entice new hires? It's not that hard to pay someone their worth considering they're going into mines and extremely dangerous conditions are present. 7.25 an hour to put my life on the line daily? Yeah I'd look for work elsewhere.

Even still, considering putting children into these conditions is just so ass backwards.

I know the answer to my first question: CEO bonuses and company profits can't take a hit especially if it means paying a livable wages to your employees.

The liability shield is especially ironic because the adults that are working those jobs don't have a liability shield. This would just incentivise these company's to hire children explicitly instead of adults.

I'm very much giving the benefit of the doubt, but Iowa law provides that workers'compensation is the sole remedy for typical negligence, by either employees or the employer, that results in bodily injury and/or death. A civil cause of action against the employer only accrues on a showing of gross negligence, which is a distinct claim from claims of normal negligence.

My gut instinct is that workers' compensation would cover the students here, but like I said, huge benefit of the doubt.

Yeah, not keen on the child labor part and please don't misconstrue my post as defending the bill. Just saying that the students, if this passes, should still have a way to get support if they're injured.

Again, that being said, I wouldn't want any teen near the tools in a meat processing plant. I've seen enough injuries from that shit with adults and it's already fucking terrifying.
