For example, if you hear a song you don't like but it still brings you back to a certain period of time in your life would that count as nostalgia?

It All depends.

In that particular Case with a song I would say yes.

Say you have a dog that keeps Chewing your shoes, but reminds you of your Childhood pet because he did the same. There may be a little nostalgia mixed in there, but probably more annoying than anything else.

Now say you have like..a Stalker you dont care for Who keeps bringing you back to his houseTo remind you about how much you used to love each other Id say that would be more Felony than nostalgia.

LOL!! All kidding aside what triggers the nostalgia doesnt have to be something you love or enjoyed. As long as it reminds you of a time in your life that is gone by and helps you better recall that time in more detail. Its Nostalgic
now nostalgia usually refers to good times or at least neutral times usually from our youth.

If something enjoyable or not brings up memories from the past that are unpleasant or traumatic in someway. And you dont really enjoy having to think about them. Youre probably closer to PTSD rather than nostalgia
