The gameboy was supposed to be the Nintendo (NES) that goes with you.

the concept was that you could play (often simplified) versions of your favorite games on the go with a portable.

Like Mario Bros? Heres Mario Land. Like yoshi, the puzzle game on the NES? Here is yoshi on the gameboy too. Like donkey Kong country? Heres donkey Kong land and donkey Kong country GBC.

this idea stuck with the game gear, neo geo pocket, lynx (arcade Atari games), and others. The pinnacle of that idea was the PSP.

then portable games sort of became their own thing

Nobody actually liked PS1/PC/etc. games getting a sidescroller GBC "port".
...except Daikatana. The GBC version is arguably the only good one.

I made a topic like this but everyone ignored it lol

There are games released for the DS and previous handheld that were certified handheld games. They are a step up from mobile games but they would never get released on a console, even a hybrid one like the Switch

There are plenty of indie/downloadable games like that

I wasn't particularly a fan of storyline heavy games having canon entries on portable devices.

stares in Metal Gear Solid and Kingdom Hearts

All on the eshop tbh. You can get most of them on Steam and youre better off doing that given Nintendos history with digital games

i guess when games became more and more complex they stopped being suitable to being scaled down and portabilized. You can do that to DKC and Mortal kombat 2. But if youre gonna play the last of us you might as well just play the console version and stream it to a device.

its to dkc what Mario land was to Mario bros, its like a bizarro version with its own charm.

Turok Evolution on the GBA is a far far better game than the console version, and you will never change my mind on this.

Handhelds also allowed 2D Zelda to continue on even with 3D Zelda on the consoles

Now 2D Zelda is pretty much dead outside that Links Awakening remake
