The writer of the original F13th movie. He was basically contracted to write a slasher flick, he made it. Then Sean Cunningham, who is the guy responsible for Jason(the kid who shows up for 5 seconds in the first movie) being the killer, made the movies and the iconic hockey mask and all that.

Basically, Miller was mad Jason was the killer, to the point he refused to even watch the future movies. He put up a lawsuit a few years ago and won it.

In essence, and dumbed down, he was contracted to write the script by Cunningham. He did so. The lawsuit was for the rights, which he won. It said that labor law was overwritten by copyright law, thus he owns the copyright to it.

ELI5 terms: He drew a stick figure getting crushed by a robot for someone, by their request and said they owned the picture, then someone made that stick figure have a whole story. Then he got mad about it, and said that was his. And the police agreed.

That's only provided his estate sells the rights back, or lends the rights. Which is possible but the absolute worst case scenario? In like 50 years F13th will be public domain and we can finally see a movie.

The first Friday movie isn't very good either imo. People like to try to hold it up as the only one that's a "real movie" in horror circles, but writing-wise it's like a lower-tier giallo movie that handles the mystery aspect of itself in an unusually poor way. So much of the movie is spent trying to drop red herrings and giving you Argento pov shots of hands killing people to give it a whodunit aspect, and then it just goes "surprise it was actually a totally new person you've never seen" for the last 20 minutes of the movie.

It's lesser than the 70s italian movies it wants so badly to be. Jason being around was what actually gave the series an identity and made them fun, no matter how schlocky they got.
