I like the gameplay. Trying to line up breaks on enemies with your characters' boost gauges is tricky and rewarding. Also stealing from npcs is fun.

The boss music is Oops, All Bangers. Also some event and environment themes are pretty good, too.

I think the story is actually pretty neat. It's a shame that the eight stories don't seem connected until the last minute, but when you do make a new connection between them, it's a cool moment. Also people criticize the fact that the eight party members don't interact and they're right to say that. Like, they do have optional scenes where character A will comment on what's happening in character B's chapter, but it's really lacking.

Amazing music, great gameplay, cool visuals, serviceable story with interesting characters

It's about an 8.5/10 imo

i liked it mechanically. story wise it's 8 isolated stories with minimal party interaction, which was the nail in the coffin for me. maybe there was something in the post game that the whole party was "together" in, but i didn't care anymore. and it seems like my issue with the series is present in 2, so i'm skipping it.

I actually liked the individual stories. None of them were groundbreaking but they were easily digestible and enjoyable to me. The gameplay was addicting.

If you want the game I would just wait and pick up the second one, it isn't connected story-wise and should be an improvement on the first in terms of characterizations.

I had a lot of fun with the battle system and how you can basically combine 2 classes to make a broken build, the main issue I have with the game is what everyone said, the segmented stories and the fact your party members don't even interact with each other except for those awkward missable moments. If Octopath Traveler 2 can fix those two issues I had with the first game, I would be down for it.

i loved the combat and character systems working in tandem. building a party to effeciently take down the enemies in the area never got boring to me.

the story is where i found the game lacking. the individual stories are all okay, but they're not connected in any meaningful way. apparently the optional super-boss addresses this, but I didn't bother with it and felt like that sorta thing should have been part of the main game.

Wish I could have given it an 8 for the meme, but 7ish is what it deserves. Good game with many unnecessary hang ups. Combat is good and rewards experimentation throughout the game. Stories/characters vary from meh to good. Wrap up at the end is cool and subtle but handled terribly for the player to actually accomplish (both to discover and to actually surmount) without a guide.

I enjoyed it and look forward to OT II hopefully fixing a lot of the (easily fixable) problems the first had.

Also, the soundtrack is one of the best orchestral OSTs of any JRPG.

really it was everything but the story.

if they can just figure out ways to make these 8 people actually interact and tie them all in to some big bad villain then it could be one of the GOAT turn-based games

soundtrack, combat, job/class system, difficulty scale, it was all great. it's just the story. 8 random semi-interesting disconnected stories that were ok on their own, but having 8 people in a party with zero knowledge as to why each other is there is just killer. when characters join the party in RPGs, there's reason for it. in this case, they're just there.

create some big bad that ties them all together and it'll be just fantastic

i'm waiting to see if 2 has better character interaction than the first. there were some odd points in OT1 where story segments would play out with the lead character and the others would just disappear. i think i saw there was some interaction but not sure how much there actually is, or if it's just a few lines here and there

The first story of Primrose was basically its peak, and then it basically spends the entire game declining til it's really hard to play it anymore. The ability to not recruit some characters aggressively hurt its story. Not having other characters be a part of the narrative also literally creates plot holes on several of the stories, and none of them are basically any good.

Then the last post game ch clumsily ties all the stories together with a duct tape, but it ultimately results in a story that's lukewarm at best.

The combat had potential to be good, but the early classes feel really bad to play, and the extra classes, the fights for them being the peak fight the game has to offer, come too late and are the only fun classes in the game. Unfortunately after you have these classes, the only challenges that are left are the ones in the last dungeon, where the fight is mid or bad at best. The looped combat also gets really grating when you're also sitting through bland story where half of them result in nothing happening and story bosses being more or less the same fight with different weaknesses.

It's as much of a 6-7/10 RPG as I've ever played. Honestly not really gonna get the 2nd one, cuz I heard the bizarre non-linearity returned. Just at least make all the characters canonically travel together, jesus fuck. Or write around them a bit better? I dunno.

Oh yeah this shit was brutal. Especially because that "dungeon" leading up to it was 8 straight boss fights. During which you cannot save. So when I lost to the final boss (courtesy of that obnoxious fight gimmick), I would've had to do all 8 again. So I called it quits there

8 straight fights before the final boss. Plus those are only as strong as they are earlier in the story, so you could waste your time thinking you're strong enough to finish the gauntlet only to be bodied by the finale. Also it's the first and only time in the game where you need two teams set up with every character equipped with strong armor, weapons, and jobs at the same time. And the particulars may take you until you get to the second phase to really understand. And the first phase alone is brutal enough to where you might not make it there on your first try.

It's a really harsh boss (and tedious lead up) and I don't blame anyone for giving up. Also the cutscene after the fact is like nothing.

Just in my humble opinion, the game looks beautiful and probably sounds good too (I don't remember the OST at all probs just heard a few songs) but something about the combat and the way I heard how the stories weren't tied together well. I just figured it was nothing I needed to go out of my way to play. I dunno maybe a bit of that Bravely Default for me too. I did own that once. The premise seemed good, but the game fell apart and I lost interest.

Gameplay is fantastic only wasted on a bad story. Not that the individual stories were bad necessarily, just that they have no interaction with eachother at all. It seems like the new one improves on that and a bunch more, it's getting great reviews.

As for me, I really didnt like the first, so i wont even give the second a chance

I thought that the map abilities were a fun idea but really poor execution. It was essentially just "use this character's map ability to progress their story". It would have been really cool if there were meaningful side quests and stuff that you could find. Generally agree with above posts, segmented stories sucked, gameplay was fun but additional classes came too late.
