I rarely watch the sport but ABC is airing a game. And so much stuff happened before it started like the navy doing a march. Both teams walking out. Two singers/players telling the crowd to make some noise. Then this dude came out with a dog and dropped a puck for the two players to fight over. Then we had to wait for the players to shake the dogs hand before moving on. All of it took about 20-22 minutes as the game finally started after all of that. When I watch football it seems everyone is already on the sidelines and they jump in for the coin toss and the game begins within 3 minutes. Or basketball they hop in during the jump ball.

Typical NHL games are usually 7-8 minutes after their stated start times, so a 7PM game has Puck drop at like 7:07PM. I'm guessing if it's on a big broadcast station like ABC they are maybe trying to milk it a bit more than normal.

Well, that's just being polite.

Youre watching an outdoor game, they have more theatrics in those. Normally just the anthem and then game on.

Yea that is probably it. Really felt odd how it kept going on and on. I guess the games indoors start faster. Like they jump straight to the puck fight.

Usually the puck drop is quick and there are considerably fewer commercial breaks compared to the other sports.

Yeah outdoor games and international games (AKA Canada VS USA) tend to have more theatrics around them.

Regular NHL games start pretty quickly though.

Outdoor games are special events, they usually have an honorary faceoff and whatnot. As said above, a normal game is the anthem and puck drop, usually just a few minutes after start time.
