I don't play many games online in the first place, but I never liked being toxic in any setting, including general discussion and fandom. I used to visit the discussion forums for the Arrowverse shows, but they were always full of the same people who did nothing but complain about the shows, yet just kept watching them anyway. It didn't make sense to me because I always believed if you're clearly not enjoying something then there's no reason to continue doing it. I'd argue that most of the online population in general has become toxic because of the Internet environment. The Internet itself inherently brings out the worst in humans because it reinforces so many of our worst behaviors without consequence. No, the opposite really. The one game I played with something close to that is World of Warcraft. While 95% of players are cool, 5% are horrible, camping and ganking lower players every day until they quit.
