I rented a sega CD, and then I no longer wanted one

Too expensive and too old for it to be so expensive. Parts are likely falling apart. Capacitors and batteries likely on their death bed. And I don't have the technical know how to repair that, nor do I want to do that.

Just waiting for alternatives to be more viable.

I own Sonic CD, is that good enough?

There's nothing really worth owning one for that doesn't exist in other spaces, and this is coming from a SEGA guy.

I own 2 Sega CD games, Mortal Kombat and Eternal Champions.

I believe there is an issue currently where a lot of the cd drives are failing in them.

What do you consider viable? There are a couple alternatives in the retro community that work great.

I still own mine, Dogmeat.

I played Dark Wizard so much that my Sega CD exploded and impaled my father with the game disc. He survived, but he made me promise to never play one again

I actually miss my sega cd. I had some awesome times with it.

Darn I hit the wrong button on my phone, but a friend of mine had a JVC X-Eye. It was such a luxury item. It was a built in Sega Genesis and Sega CD. Not sure if it supported the 32x but w/e. We played a lot if Lunar games on that system, Shining Force cd and some really bad games like WWF Rage in the Cage.

It was also either the size of a sticky note or really choppy partial screen video. A la WWF Rage in the Cage those fmvs are hilariously bad they are just so compressed. Game did suck and I love wrestling. I doubt the actual game took up that much space.

Ok they weren't as choppy as I remembered but yeah there is like no color variety. What the hell. Such a ugly weird edition but it was the "premier" wrestling game on the Sega cd, I think ;P

It's not very good. Also they had to keep reminding you what game you were playing with that pretty cool animation of the elbow drop into the game logo but then they kept doing it.

Someone was too proud of their accomplishment with Sega CD hardware.

Also tbh the sound on the Sega CD was just soo special and super great.

I had one and several games. It was awesome for the time.

I mean as long as you stayed away from Marky Mark make my video and the stupid fmv games there was some merit.

are there noticeable improvements in graphics between sega cd games and regular genesis games? not asking about those weird cd rom games with FMVs, i mean entire sprite based games on the sega cd

i guess i'm just overall wondering what makes a game need to be on the sega cd instead of a regular cartridge

I do own a Sega CD actually. Only had like 4 games for it though. Ecco: The Tides of Time, Lord's of Thunder, Sonic CD and The Adventures of Batman and Robin

i think i still actually do own one yeah, somewhere around here. oh wait, it's right next to me lol. but i haven't played it in years.

Imo the graphics were the same as Genesis it just sounded way better.

Same graphics, but better music quality. One of my favorites was Lords of Thunder. Fun side scrolling shooter with great music.

Haha #27 Jagr. Wrestlemania on the NES was ass but there was seriously something wrong with Rage in the Cage. I remember yea there were 20 wrestlers which at the time was crazy but the gameplay was worse than Royal Rumble.

Also anyone here ever play Dark Wizard? It was a Sega CD exclusive still to this day. It's a mix of Ogre Battle and other strategy. Game had an amazing soundtrack think thr battles could get you caught in a loop b/c the boss of the map could keep summoning minions, but unlike say Vay, it felt worth playing.

Working Designs loved the Sega CD. I still have a copy of Dark Wizard complete fwiw. Don't know who H.I.C. is but Sega published it.

Back in those days, upping the roster count was the cheap way to get unsuspecting dummies to buy trash WWF games. Wrestlemania Arcade had 6 total and that was as decent is it could get for a poorly designed rasslin title running on Mortal Kombat graphics

Oh gosh Wrestlemania Arcade this is getting off topic but that was a bizarre one. Do I want two less wrestlers and clearer but less audio on the SNES or muddy but more audio and to play as Bam Bam Bigelow and more wrestlers in the ring too on the Genesis. Maybe it was just him missing from the snes, but the 90s were one of a kind.

I really liked the Wrestlemania Arcade game it was the right amount of goofy and silliness at the time.

Shit I was right *edited* how do you just remove Yokozuna and Bam Bam Bigelow and be happy with your release.

Popful Msil was I think a victim of Working Designs making the games actually more difficult in the west. I mean who rents Sega CD games but people put out that rental theory. Popful Mail was funny and cute and colorful but holy crap it felt really hard too during some boss fights.

I probably just didn't focus enough on a pattern though.

Unfortunately a lot of game makers were lazy and just ported their Genesis titles to the Sega CD with CD quality soundtracks and an extra level to get people to double dip. Some actually put in effort into their ports to produce a better product.
