My local used to be before covid. Now that literally no one cares about covid they're still closing at 11pm.

I used to like shopping in the middle of the night.

none around here. honestly it probably costs more to pay cashiers to be there overnight than what they actually make during that time so i wouldnt be surprised if they use it as an excuse to keep it that way

I agree I use to love late night Wal-Mart runs.

Yeah. The only issue I had was walking around pallets/boxes blocking aisles and employees stocking shelves. They wouldn't move out of your way.

But still better than day Walmart.

Dollar General is the trashiest shit I've ever seen in my life. One of the ones down here kept a display of squished up Hershey bars for several weeks. I bought one and it was white when I opened it...

The stores always look like a horrible mess too, and there's barely any room to walk down any aisles.

I don't think the DG here has wiped off their scanners in months, it's all white and smeared always. The store is disgusting, and i'm not really exaggerating. They are normally 40% out of stock storewide also, cat food section is always 20% stocked on a good day.

I thought my local DG may have just had bad management, but I guess it's the norm. I only go there when I want to ship something FedEx because they're a hub or whatever. Last time I went in it looked like there was a mudslide. The floors were filthy and there were boxes and debris all over the place.

There's a Family Dollar around the corner I go to for cheap stuff and it's usually clean.

They do not want to be open 24 hours. Walmart has no staff and no security at night. It's hard on the O/N team because they have to finish stocking and do not have time to deal with customers. Also, it's a waste of payroll to have O/n cashiers and O/N Supervisors watching them.

Tbf DG is cheap on everything especially payroll. Employees do not have the time to maintain the store.

Stockers are on a strict time limit. They can and will get shit canned if they don't finish the freight in the allotted time. All pallets have to be finished and any overstock have to be put way in the bins before the Store Manager gets in and does the morning tour.

I live like 2 minutes from a dollar general so i go in there for simple food stuff a lot, and the one near me is mostly fine as far as cleanliness and service goes. The weird thing I've always found about it is despite being branded as a discount store their groceries are on average about the same as any other grocery store in the area, and more expensive than wal mart.

It's the same with Family Dollar. Some things are cheaper than other places like canned food. But stuff like milk and cheese can be more expensive than a regular grocery store.

I just consider them small department stores. Not sure why "dollar" is even in the names of these places since they're not dollar stores.

They used to be dollar stores, now (at least for DG) it's because everything is a full dollar amount. It's been awhile since I've been in the family dollar (funnily enough because they opened a genuinely nice DG directly beside it) , so I can't recall if they're set up the same.

They were also good for recluses who don't like crowds, or if someone has an emergency in the middle of the night. I guess at the end of the day it's really not worth their time to stay open all night. But it was a nice option.
