99% sure he was serious, though.
There's nothing wrong with disliking Breath of the Wild but the nonsense reason he invented for why its objectively bad and that Nintendo is mindlessly chasing "such a small demographic" is either ace brain worms internet jabbering or the mark of someone that has truly mastered the style of terminal brain worm infection.

People are usually right to either outright disbelieve games sales numbers or point out how unreliable they are but BotW numbers are so huge and consistent that it would take willful ignorance to not know it is by far the best selling Zelda game.

Yep, he's being a terribly silly goose. A lot of people seem to think that they can only dislike something if they discredit people who do like it, and I think he's fallen into that trap.

Ocarina is actually a huge part of why I stopped caring about Zelda (and Nintendo) as a whole (and why I've never really looked back since).

By the time it came out I'd already jumped ship to the PS1, and I thought most N64 games both looked and played like ass. Not helped by the fact that I thought the N64 controller was an abomination spawned in Satan's bowels. The only reason I don't consider it the worst controller ever made is because the Intellivision existed, and that one would literally cut your thumbs.

3D Zelda and 3D Mario were huge turn-offs for me. To me they looked bad, they played bad, and they kind of changed the entire dynamic of the original games (in a bad way) by adding the extra axis. Zelda wasn't helped by the fact that I thought the story was kind of lame (and it was around the start of the "Why the fuck do Zelda games make no sense?" era of questioning the overall timeline).

I didn't like it then, I have zero nostalgia for it now. And I think nostalgia is the main reason why so many people still fellate it today (it released right at the prime sweet spot for a lot of current-gen gamers childhoods, and it's the sort of game most of them would have played as kids).

I came at it from the other direction, Wind Waker + Master Quest and it already felt clunky and outdated compared to WW. The N64 controller was this abomination that I only touched at my cousin's house and never got used to. I remember the graphics-obsessed were enraged over kiddie Link and that was all that mattered then. Today they don't talk about the graphics which are dated, they talk about how it made them feel when it was the first adventure game they ever played when they opened up the N64 under the Christmas tree when they were 8.

Tbf, most games in the Zelda Franchise had people complaining when they first came out. With Majoras Mask, it was the time limit. With Wind Waker, it was the graphics. With Twilight Princess, it was the grittyness and wolf parts Most things got better (except the wolf parts, since many still seem to hate that) And by the next, things are usually fine
