I think my communications skills have atrophied so much where I've noticed me replying to "how's it going" with a simple "heeey."
But when I hear other people greeting, it usually goes like this:
"How's it going Bob?,
"I'm good, Joel you?"
"I'm good thanks."

Is it really necessary to reply back with the same answer? It kind of seems insincere and a waste of couple seconds if there's nothing said that will extend the conversation. Wouldn't a simple hello or hey, suffice instead?

you can respond however you want. you're not gaining any kind of rank or points by responding a certain way.

i like to reply with how i'm doing, vividly, if i feel social. if i don't feel like talking, i usually keep it short. if i don't like the person, i pretend like i didn't hear anything. just do what you want.
