Current Events > Anyone agree that making friends with younger people is a waste of time?

Unless it's for networking purposes or with the intent to court for marriage?

I'm currently entering my thirties and studying for my undergraduate. My biggest qualm is that I'm surrounded by people half my age and I can't seem to psyche myself to make new friends; mainly because I hold so many reservations on how little time I have left. It's just not fun talking about subjects that center around social media, trends around pop culture, and anything that appeals to youths that haven't had their prefrontal cortex fully developed yet. These are experiences I've gone through when I was their age; what's the point of me trying to re-experience the same thing again? It all seems pointless and I can't seem to go past that age bias. I'm at that point in my life where I need to start thinking about my future and what it means to be fully self-sufficient. I want to grow and be better than I was yesterday.

Anybody else going through the same phenomena? Is it pointless making friends with people much younger than you? I'd also appreciate any stories or insight that could help me change my viewpoint.

3 month old account talking about age. And that's beside the point that any post from a low karma user below level 33 should not be taken seriously anyway.

I kinda get where you are coming from but that doesn't mean you shouldn't have basic relationships with people just because they are not in the same boat as you. Although I agree being older should get me out of work beers.

I love the young people.

Everything in life is pointless.

Dont make friends with them if you think doing so would genuinely interfere with your self-improvement goals.

Do make friends with them if you want to and wont be otherwise affected negatively.

No. After my divorce at 40, almost all my new friends (and people I dated) were in their 20s and 30s. But it fit my lifestyle at the time.

Now you know how you sound like. But really, anybody under level 33, especially on CE, should not be taken seriously. If you were a reliable poster who's able to do the bare minimum of following the rules of the site and not finding loopholes after you get kicked out, you wouldn't be a low karma user.

I only have a few 'close friends' but have several acquaintances/friends on levels below that.

Just go with the flow instead of focusing on an end goal.

This is my main. And since my account is above level 33, by your own criteria, that is a statement you can trust. I wouldn't lie to you like a level 32 account would.

Anyone below level 33 is automatically untrustworthy but that doesn't mean everyone above it is trustworthy. You're still an obvious alt that anyone would pinpoint if you were shitposting in a big topic, for good reason.

The fact that you can't trust a level 34 account to not be an alt really just undercuts your focus on 33 and below, and at that point if you don't trust anyone what is even the point of your account?

They could still very easily be alts but if they've been dedicated enough to keep up an account for 2 years then I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt if there isn't any other issues.

Sorry, forgot to check back. The divorce was actually the best thing that could have happened at the time. It gave me a second life, but I don't regret the marriage because of my daughters.

I met all my friends in 2 ways.

1. I moved to downtown St Paul and just would go out and hang out at bars and patios, and met some good people that way. I also met someone who was the first person I dated after my divorce and she have me my self esteem back.

2. I joined Meetup and started hanging out with this group for more geeky people. We did a wide variety of events, from movies and board game nights to bar crawls and brewery events. We became so close that we hung out outside of the Meetup events. And since this was a mixed gender group, lots of relationships started and I ket my now fiance through the group as well.

I always advise that people join Meetup for friends, building up social abilities and possibly finding a relationship.

Posting on a low karma alt to get low karma attention is certainly one way to do things

I like to make friends with younger people I work with or have to see in my office just so I can hit them with outdated memes and make them roll their eyes.

I have big dad energy.

Tbh I wish I had a younger brother sometimes I dunno I felt like I could have been more encouraging in a not holier than thou way.

Also yea I don't want to deal with kids but it's neat to see how younger people react to the world with internet 24/7.

It is for me. Ive always gotten along better with people older than me than younger than me. When talking with people younger than me it feels like walking on eggshells because they get triggered for just about anything and they are full of narcissism.

Relationships (platonic and non) are more about kompatibility, and experience is a fraction of that, and kan easily be rendered irrelevant. I don't know about you, but I kould easly be good friends with a klone of myself from 10 years ago.
