It was circular logic used to give one claim to power.

People that wanted to escape a particular political landscape did so with the excuse of religion.

It has nothing to do with being a good person or morals.

I think religion was created as a way to explain the unknown.

religion always probably had a deep profound purpose in society or else it wouldn't be such a innate human characteristic

It's hard for me to not think of religion predating political organization. Except for the family, so that makes sense.

Theology or rational inquiry in schools is very different but that isn't what you're talking about? Is the implication that political always applies to rational situations too?

I think religion started as a joke between two guys who were talking. One guy told his friend I bet you I can tell these people a story and get them to give me money. After it worked, they kept doing it and eventually people continued to donate money to them and they got rich. That's how religions became billion dollar organizations.

Nah, humanity should have grown out of religion by now.

I could believe it started as an attempt to fill gaps in knowledge, but it's silly to deny that it has long since been taken over by those who want power.

The man who created religion was the greatest con-man to have ever lived.

I once saw something with a chimpanzee out during a thunderstorm, gesturing wildly, and iirc, the theory was that some form of religion arose with our ancestors (pre homosapiens), where they would attempt to "bargain" with the elements in some way, since there was so much beyond their control.

and as we, and society, developed, so did our systems of bargaining and understanding the unknown, and religions are a result of that.

like, it's all intrinsically tied to what we are because we have a sense of "something more", whether our beliefs are true or not.

While it has certainly been used for political purposes, I doubt thats the origin of it.
Id imagine it stems more from a fear of the unknown or death.
