I need a new phone. My current one, Pixel 4A, still works great but got a cracked screen on the top right of the phone. I would still use it until it stops working completely but I want to see what's out there right now

If you want flagship fun on an uppermiddleclass budget I'd recommend a pixel 7 or one of the last few One+ models. Realme and xiaome make good tech apparently, but I've got no forst hand experience to recommend off of

Smartphones haven't been interesting in years unless you want to splurge for foldables. You're pretty much gonna get the same experience on any Android flagship unless you get a Pixel, which will give you a nice vanilla, non-bloated experience.

You might want to consider switching to the iPhone since they're switching to USB-C this year. iPhones get supported for years and years, plus they keep their value if you want to resell.

Do you have a particular budget in mind?

Two years.

You are thinking of two years. That's the time frame where they keep getting sued because it turns out their current phone is set up to give a worse experience after two years.

iPhones get at least five years' worth of iOS updates and continued smaller security updates, and developers will stop optimizing apps for older models once they're completely off the market and stopped receiving extended support from Apple.

I have an iPad Pro that's almost five years old and it still works perfectly and can max modern demanding games, even at 120FPS. My mother had an iPhone 6 for years and years and worked completely fine until she upgraded to a phone with a larger screen.

And the battery is set up to rapidly degrade after ~500 charge cycles.

I've had my phone for over two years and even with heavy usage some times, its battery health level is only at 95%.

I can only talk about the average experience/things that have gotten Apple successfully sued. I am not going to break into your house to play around with electronics.

Because it's bullshit. They weren't set up to rapidly degrade after 500 cycles.

Weird thing to lie about, but you do you.

Anyway, TC, I have a Pixel 6a which is excellent, so Im sure the 7 series is good too. Samsungs S23 series seems fine, with the Ultra being excellent. If you like iOS, an iPhone 14 (Pro if you want) would be good.

Personally Id go Pixel or iPhone. Samsungs bloat pisses me off.

The problem is widespread enough for the lawsuits to be legitimate but in my years fixing smartphones, the only iPhone users I dealt with who complained about rapidly-degrading batteries were people who had no other devices, who would constantly be using them at full brightness. These issues are also more common with people using older devices running older versions of iOS with less power saving/optimization tweaks.

Even then, I would rather deal with the possibility of having to replace my battery after two years over the inevitability of a high-end Android device being treated like it's obsolete sometimes less than two years after its release.

I've been using iOS and Android since their inception and a lot of fundamental Android-related issues still persist.

The issue has always been about throttling the OS as the battery starts depleting faster after 80%. This is the nature of all lithium ion batteries.

The lawsuit only forced Apple to explain what's happening and give an option to turn it all off, which is all still there till today.

This started with iPhone 5S and iPhone 6 phones experiencing it about 3-4 years after release.

Nothing you said was correct.

So what you are saying is that people can make frivolous lawsuits with no bearing against Apple and win for hundreds of millions of dollars?

Do you even think about what you type, or do you not actually put the shapes in the correct hole?

I got my first smartphone , a 6S+, in October 2019, 4 years after it released. It was still getting updates in July 2021 when I upgraded to a XR, just shy of 3 years after its release.

Lol Galaxy is what the Pixel wants to be when it grows up. The flagship Galaxys have better hardware and longer software support.

And for all the whining about "bloat" I hear about Samsung, Google has a long history of adopting what Samsung does into core Android.

iPhone for sure

The battery on my 5S kind of sucked and had to change it for a new battery after about 3 years, but my iphone 8 stayed strong for all four years I used it until I upgraded to the iPhone 13, so the battery problem is old news IMO

Why do you even need a flagship? Don't cheap out completely; but for most people a good mid-range phone will likely do the job just as well, for much less $$$.

Somehow I doubt Google aspires to install a bunch of redundant, worse apps alongside the Microsoft apps you didn't ask for.

Well, no, some of those apps are actually better such as Samsung Internet or Notes. Also, Google has Samsung to thank for many new core OS features - here's a selection from Android 11.

https://www.androidpolice.com/2020/09/15/6-features-in-android-11-that-samsung-one-ui-had-first/

...and Android 12:
https://www.androidpolice.com/five-android-12-features-samsung-already-had-in-one-ui/

Also, you know that Magic Eraser feature that Google has been touting in advertisements lately? Samsung had it first in the native gallery app like a year before Google introduced it in Photos. Nobody cares about the Pixel and the sales indicate that.
