I want to see the Puss in Boots movies, especially the last one with that wolf that furries are going apeshit over, but I feel like I need to watch the Shreck movies first to be able to appreciate them. That feels like a time commitment.

This is the third Puss in Boots movie, right?

Last Wish is the second Puss in Boots. There's only one before it. And while they reference Shrek movies and characters, they're perfectly cohesive on their own. Even the second one doesn't really require you to know anything from the first one.

That surprises me. Between a conflict with Death himself and the word "last" appearing in the title, I was thinking it was the end of a trilogy -- like Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade was meant to be.

Yeah, there have been tons of topics praising it. I saw it with my girlfriend and her friend. We all loved it.

And the wolf was fucking fantastic, holy shit. Easily the best parts of the movie. Here's the first scene the wolf appears in, if you don't mind having an early scene spoiled (don't look for more scenes though, heavy spoilers out there)

Only watched half the first one and was like "meh". Took gf out to see it on our anniversary and it was amazing. Legit funny moments, appeals way more to a mature audience than expected, and the action sequences were fucking :chefskiss: level of animation quality.

Amazing, amazing movie that had no right to be as good as it was.

Also, outside of just recognizing one or two characters, you do not need to see the Shrek movies to understand this movie. Heck, you could probably get away with skipping Puss in Boots 1 and still be alright. This is a pretty self-contained story.

You can make anything sound stupid when you grossly oversimplify it like this.

"I'm supposed to care about a ship tragedy movie because a rich girl fell in love or whatever."
"I'm supposed to care about an absurdist comedy-drama film because an Asian woman is having a mid-life crisis or whatever."

Not every story has to be a trilogy lol. And the "last" is less abrupt if you consider the Shrek films as part of Puss's story. Also finality is kind of a theme in the story. But yeah, the title does give trilogy-end vibes. Blame the trilogy-happy cinema market, idk.

I agree with others saying The Last Wish had no right to be as good as it was. The first movie was very run on the mill that didn't really "subvert" fairy tale tropes, in fact it played it very straight. The second movie is leaps bound a better film in general. I really like the fact that the movie was able to include 3 different villain achetypes and for the most part worked. I think the 3 bears and Godilock story arc could've been fleshed out a little better (and that's really just a nitpick on my end), but Jack Horner and Wolf Death more than makes up for it. I really enjoy the fact that they made Perrito an actual likable character. Normally, the sidekick cute achetypes like him piss me the fuck off, but they manage to make him very likable in a funny and emotional way. I think I was the only one in the audience that laughed at this backstory. It was so mean spirited that it caught me off guard.

Have the same creative team who made this movie make the next Shrek film. Honestly, Dreamworks really needs to take advantage of this while Disney and Pixar films have been fairly lackluster lately.

Absolutely agree with you on the archetypes. Outside of the general mature theme of the movie that people like to praise, it's really cool how the movie deconstructed movie trope villains as represented through three characters. You have the comically evil villain who's evil for the sake of it (and enjoys every bit of it), the potentially-redeemable villain with a tragic backstory that's doing what they perceive is right, and then the force of nature villain who isn't really good or bad but just following a code and sticks to that code.

Really, every character gets a decent amount of development in that film, and to an extent subverts common tropes of that character type. The "tough female lead" isn't a Mary Sue, and ends up getting hurt and humiliated as often as the male lead. The "funny sidekick" is not as stupid as you expect him to be, just kind and sometimes naive but overall a very clever and wise character with a surprisingly depressing backstory.

Honestly, if I would of liked it, the hype probably killed it for me.

Id love to pretend I can see things completely objectively. But that movie has been put on such a high pedestal that it would be impossible to meet those expectations at this point. That's especially not good for a comedy movie for me. Since comedy is one the most subjective genre. You'll have me in my head like "Ok. That was funny...but not funny enough for all that praise". Maybe Im wrong. Ill watch it if it becomes easily accessible to me and my nieces are around

It's not the comedy aspects that get all of the praise though. I still say check it out when you get the chance. It's on Peacock, but you need to pay $5/month for that now.

Well... Gingy makes a cameo and Shrek is in a flashback, and then there's the after-credit scene...
