He sees Krillin die in OG Dragon Ball. And in Saiyan Saga when he finally arrives, he sees that Tien, Yamcha, Piccolo, and Chaotzu are dead and Nappa is literally about to kill his son Gohan before Goku intervenes and saves him. What makes Frieza killing Krillin make him snap to Super Saiyan? >_>

There was a minimum powerlevel needed that he did not reach until his zenkai boost after healing from the Captain Ginyu shenanigans. Same with Gohan. Goten and Trunks could do it as little kids because Toriyama didn't give a shit anymore.

That's my headcanon, anyway.

  1. Toriyama just makes shit up as he goes along.
  2. The Namek saga was mostly pissing on power levels, see Ginyu outright saying Goku could modulate his power level, so just randomly going "fuck it, transformation" is within the character of the writing
  3. IIRC Krillin's death in Namek was completely and utterly pointless, in your own example, Tien, Yamcha, ect died fighting. Krillin was literally running away.

Iirc there was a certain power level that had to be achieved, and Goku just got there right before or during the fight. I think Vegata was also supposed to be at the verge of the power level to go super saiyan, but barely fell short

Goten and Trunks were both strong enough to be more than a match for Frieza, which is about how strong Goku was when he first went super saiyan.

I think they decided Saiyans have some kind of midichlorian kinda cells, so they don't transform if they don't have enough. Silly excuse, but makes sense as to why the later generations can transform more easily, at least.

Yeah I think Super came up with the concept of S Cells. Honestly should have been there from the start.

If full blooded saiyans hair never changes from the day that they're born then a full blooded saiyan probably doesn't have downstairs hair that would transform.

Goku was never depressed, wut? He's like the least depressed person possible. The more likely explanation is that SSJ just was not a concept back then.

You recall wrong. Krillin was standing still when Frieza levitated him in the air with telekinesis that he only ever used once and then exploded him.

There was a canon explanation they made, saying they needed enough "S cells" in order to transform.

Its all about Saiyan biology. Power level, innate ability, offsprings, saiyan/human hybrid blood, emotion, circumstances all play a factor.

Because DBZ is Toriyama basically making a story out of the gameplay of Dragon Warrior. You grind and level up and eventually get power creeped by the next area. Goku learns Super Saiyan at level 36 and got enough experience points during the battle with Frieza in order to hit that level and learn the move.

Simply explanation is Goku wasnt a Sayian in DB, he was a Sun Wukong stand in and the whole being an warrior alien wasnt thought of until DBZ where Super Sayian was Toriyamas endgame for him until the franchise made hella money and he had to continue it forever.
